I’ve lost count of the number of cars which have come and gone over the years during a career working on car magazines – from the Escort RS Turbo I was given with my first Editor’s job, to press loan BMWs in the early 2000s and then a stream of everchanging classics in more recent years. One constant which was there almost since the beginning though was my Alfa Spider, a car I bought long before family or any kind of responsibility were on the horizon. Marks on the paintwork attested to the attentions of long-gone pet cats, there’s still an indentation from various baby seats on the passenger seat and when cleaning it out recently I found a roll of wedding ribbon. Despite this, after 23 years’ ownership I was surprised…

CLASSICS FACING ENVIRONMENTAL BACKLASH? Traditionally, classic car owners are used to compliments, with a passing comment at the filling station or positive feedback at a show only adding to the pleasure of ownership. Sadly, not everyone sees a historic vehicle in such a positive light, with owners facing a possible backlash from those who feel that they are damaging the environment. Fossil-fuelled cars undoubtedly face more hurdles than ever. The impending ban on sales of new combustion-engined cars could be as little as a decade away and restrictive emission zones, though in some cases delayed by Covid-19, are still on the cards in many major cities. Climate change groups such as Extinction Rebellion have also become prevalent, demonstrating at motor shows in Europe and vandalising UK dealer premises. It seems that classic owners…

new v5c online service

The DVLA has hit the headlines during the pandemic due to delays associated with paper applications, but now the time it takes motorists to receive a duplicate log book (V5C) has been slashed from six weeks to just five days as a result of a new online service. The ‘Get a vehicle log book (V5C)’ service has been designed for motorists who have lost or damaged their log book. It’s the second online service to be launched by the DVLA in the last four months, following the option to update addresses on V5Cs, which has been used more than 300,000 times since it started in June. Every year, the DVLA issues around 500,000 duplicate V5Cs. Julie Lennard, DVLA Chief Executive, said: “We know how important a log book is to motorists so…

Following a decade of continued growth and success in the UK, Historics is set to expand into mainland Europe by staging a major international auction in Monaco next year. Historics founder and Managing Director, Mark Perkins, commented: “We have been considering international expansion for some time and holding the sale in Monaco is an exciting way to celebrate our past decade and begin the next with an impressive array of significant classics.” The Monaco sale will be in addition to Historics’ UK…

all change at rootes

Despite the challenges 2020 has thrown in front of the classic car industry and the world in general, it’s great to be able to report that the Association of Rootes Car Clubs has now achieved its key objective of preserving the Rootes archives. Originally created back in 1982, the Association formed a charitable trust, The Rootes Archive Centre Trust, in 2004 and since then has worked to preserve the history of the Rootes Group by providing a permanent home for the archives. Initially this was a rented building until in 2015 the decision was taken to acquire freehold premises, the £181,500 cost raised in loans provided by the Rootes community. By early 2021 these loans will have been fully repaid, with the Rootes Archive Centre Trust fully owning the building which houses…
