AMAR GROVER Who: Writer; Tranquil in Tamil Nadu; p200 A: “The western edge of China’s Sichuan province offers magnificent scenery and a fascinating shift from Han Chinese to Tibetan culture. Good roads and decent—but not luxurious—hotels mean visiting is no longer an expedition, though only a few operators really know this region.” @therovergrover ANGELINA JOSEPH Who: Hair & makeup artist; cover A: “Gansu province in China is the best kept secret in Asia. It is steeped in the history of the Silk Road and has the prevalence of much Islamic and Tibetan influences. The region is abundant in natural beauty, deserts, heritage sites and man-made monasteries. There could not be a better spot for an avid explorer.” @angelinajoseph NEHA PRASADA Who: Writer; Girls Gone Wild; p127 A: “The most underrated Asian destination for me would be Myanmar.…

editor’s letter

It’s hard to believe we’re over halfway through 2019. The year is speeding past us, and there’s little time remaining to check off our lofty New Year’s resolutions, or even the destinations on our bucket lists. As I write this letter, it’s still tense in Kashmir; all flights to Kochi have been suspended due to heavy rainfall; and Taiwan has been hit by an earthquake. Everything seems to be a little precarious right now, and more and more people seem to be Googling “Mercury in retrograde” than ever before. Yet, we know life will go on. I’ve never visited Lebanon, but I remember a friend telling me why she loves it: because of the years of conflict Beirut witnessed, its citizens are determined to make the most of every day. They party…

journeying by the book

We are all armchair travellers. For some of us of a certain vintage, our flight of imagination took place before our first flights out of home. Literature gave us wings. “I decided that travel was flight and pursuit in equal parts,” wrote Paul Theroux in that landmark of travel writing, The Great Railway Bazaar. While books, like travel, were an escape, they also became the destination. What’s London without a visit to The Old Curiosity Shop? No visit to San Francisco is complete without a visit to the Beat mecca, City Lights bookstore, or a drink at Vesuvio next door, hangout of Kerouac and Ginsberg. And when Anne Frank wrote her diary, she couldn’t foretell the crowds that would throng her beloved home in Amsterdam. The hills, to me, evoke the works…

a charmed life on the go

The quiet charm of Udaipur enamours you the minute you land. The rain doesn’t bother you either—the monsoon only heightens the beauty of the city, bringing to life the colours of the surrounding Aravalli hills. It helps that our mise en scène is the dreamy Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur—the historic 18th-century pleasure palace of Maharana Jagat Singh II of the Mewar Kingdom. Casually planted on an island in the heart of Lake Pichola, the property was originally built for the after-hour escapades of the royals. It’s a particularly cloudy evening in Udaipur, and we are at the Taj Lake Palace’s Mewar Terrace, the water of Lake Pichola dancing below us. While this fairy-tale like scene unfolds before us, the neighbourhood’s resident pigeons have front-row seats as our leading lady, actress, producer and…
