I'll be honest, the "vs" in the name of this month's cover feature is mostly added for dramatic effect. East Coast and West Coast approaches to synthesis aren't exactly Coke and Pepsi, or Apple and Microsoft; two sides battling to prove the other is irrelevant. While the two approaches are linked to notable synth brands – Moog on the one side, Buchla and Serge on the other – their two takes on synthesis and sound creation aren't so much warring paradigms as two sides of the same coin. there’s no stopping behringer’s train of ‘tributes’

Despite the fact that German brand Behringer has released some impressive original instruments in recent years – the Deepmind, Neutron and, more recently, Crave synths – it's the company's ongoing range of ‘tributes’ that have grabbed most of the limelight. These instruments aim to replicate and, to some extent, build on the look, sound and workflow of iconic vintage instruments, at a price point that is often less than a tenth of what the original instruments go for second-hand. Admittedly, so far Behringer has promised more of these tributes than it’s actually delivered; to-date their Minimoog Model D, SH-101 and VP-330-inspired instruments are the only ones to make it out into the wild, despite at least twice as many again having been teased in recent months. audiothingies’ doctor a effects could be the perfect partner to any synth setup

When it comes to livening up a dry synth sound, nothing hits the spot quite like a touch of reverb or delay, and Audiothingies’ new Doctor A effect looks like the ideal tool to fulfill that need. Housed in a compact desktop package, the unit is a vintage-inspired stereo reverb and delay equipped with MIDI and CV ins. Audiothingies promises that Doctor A will be “easy to use, fun to tweak, and sounds great too,” and judging by the demo videos we’ve seen, we’re inclined to agree. Feature-wise, it boasts a 12-bit multimode delay and vintage multimode digital reverb, both of which can be modulated. e-mu’s iconic sampler is reborn in isla instruments’ sp 2400

E-MU’s SP-1200 remains one of the most influential and sought-after classic samplers, so it’s exciting to see it making a return, of sorts, in the form of Isla Instruments’ SP 2400. First teased earlier this year, Isla is calling the instrument a ‘spiritual successor’ to E-MU’s classic. The machine offers both lo-fi 12-bit/26kHz and ‘HD’ 24-bit/48kHz modes, so you can go for old-school authenticity or pristine performance, depending on your preference. There’s plenty of I/O, too, and the SP 2400 comes in what’s described as a “rock-solid” metal enclosure. The SP 2400 is now available for pre-order for $949, though finished units won’t arrive until December 2019 or January 2020. nabc is a portable analog compressor for creative real-time sidechaining

It’s not often that we come across a product that feels genuinely different, but nABC – not Another Boring Compressor – looks like a proper mould-breaker. It’s a portable “studio-grade” analog compressor that comes in an audio interface-style enclosure, and is designed to ease the process of applying sidechain compression and give you more control over it. The Big Idea is that you can trigger the sidechain via MIDI, USB, analog synth signals (gate/CV) or pedals, with no audio routing required. You can also dictate the time, depth and shape of the compression, giving you plenty of creative scope. You could, for example, program your sidechain compression by creating a sequencer pattern, or by playing a MIDI keyboard.
