Four years ago, when I wanted to lose a stubborn half a stone of middle-age spread, I followed the 5:2 diet. It worked. I’m prone to snacking and it helped reset my eating dial, so I became used to hunger pangs between meals. Recently, I got to meet fasting guru Michael Mosley and his GP wife Clare to talk about their health mission that goes far beyond losing a pesky half a stone. They’ve seen positive results for their new low-carb, Med-style fasting diet, which can put type 2 diabetes into remission. Fasting started as a personal crusade for Michael, who was diagnosed with type 2 six years ago. At his father’s funeral, a friend commented on how much like him he was (Mr Mosley senior, a type 2 diabetic,…

‘ I’ve been trying really hard to avoid buying tea or coffee in single-use cups, so I need to remember to bring my reusable hot drinks cup with me. The next step is to replace it with a water bottle and rely on this instead for hydration as much as I can – except on Friday nights when I take my son to football (the one time I always remember my keep-cup) and a hot drink on the side-lines is non-negotiable!’ AMANDA URSELL is HFG’s nutrition editor. She has a degree in nutrition and a post-graduate diploma in dietetics ‘ I should limit time spent on my phone. You only have to look around a train carriage to see everyone in a hunched position, which is terrible for our back health. I’m…

HELP WITH MAPPING MY DIET JOURNEY I bought your February issue because the line on the cover about diabetes and low-carb diets caught my eye. I’ve just had my over-40s health check at my GP surgery and one test showed I was prediabetic. It has shocked me into action – and I need to lose weight. If I continue to gain pounds, the nurse explained, my prediabetes could turn into full-blown type 2 diabetes and I would need to take medication. I went straight to Juliette Kellow’s article Diabetes update: should you go low-carb?, which was reassuring and laid out the pros and cons clearly. For now, though, I’m going to cut out refined carbs, switch to wholegrains and follow Amanda’s monthly diet plan. I’ve already done the Monday to Sunday…
