hello!

It’s summer! It’s hot! And if there’s any uncertainty about that, please observe Priyanka Chopra Jonas on this issue’s cover. I love this woman—she is funny and frank on top of being irresponsibly gorgeous and a beloved icon in her homeland of India. When we were talking about her cover, Priyanka suggested a story called “Indian Summer” that would be inspired by her roots. A certified Bollywood star, she was wary of playing dated stereotypes when she started working in the U.S., so instead, she opted for roles that allowed her to blend in and not focus on her heritage. Now, following her marriage to American pop star Nick Jonas and the introduction of her native country to him and others, she is determined not only to embrace her culture…

the cover

On the set of our shoot Priyanka Chopra Jonas explained that she’s just as much “a jeans–and–T-shirt girl” as she is “a sexy sari siren.” To accommodate her East-meets-West aesthetic, clothing racks were stacked with popular Indian designers like Sabyasachi Calcutta and Tarun Tahiliani as well as American and European labels such as J.Crew, Fendi, and Hermès. Chopra Jonas even brought a few choice accessories of her own, including a pair of musical anklets—called ghungroo bells—that she wore while showing off her best classical Indian dance moves. She also bopped along to hits by her husband Nick’s band, the Jonas Brothers, before ending the day with another flourish: Forgoing a shirt under her traditional sari, Chopra Jonas bared her skin while striking an over-the-shoulder pose. It was yet another sign…

the start: the news in style

FINE ARTS Buzzy London-based designer Roksanda Ilinčić and size-inclusive luxury label Marina Rinaldi are teaming up for two seasons. The first collection, available in U.S. sizes 8 to 24, hits stores in July. The inspiration? The graphic, minimalist artwork of Frank Stella and Ilinčić’s own message to the world: Fashion is fun! Indeed. Marina Rinaldi by Roksanda top ($585), skirt ($975), and boots ($785); world.marinarinaldi.com. Jennifer Fisher hoops ($350) and cuffs (silver, $795 each; gold, $995 each); jenniferfisherjewelry.com. A Little Italy Birkenstock sandals continue their world domination with seven new styles (including the first-ever raffia Birks), as the company teams up with Marie-Louise Sciò, creative director of ultra-luxe hotel Il Pellicano in Tuscany’s Porto Ercole. The collection is called Il Dolce Far Niente (Italian for “sweet doing nothing”)—perfect for the lazy, hazy days of…

“There is no limit to imagination, no aesthetic possibility that can’t be explored.”—PIERPAOLO PICCIOLI At a time when cross-pollination is the latest buzzword of disruption, collaborations are a dime a dozen, but the mash-up taking place between Valentino’s Pierpaolo Piccioli and Undercover’s Jun Takahashi may well be a fashion bromance for the ages. What started as mere flirtation, when Takahashi was among several artists who created items for Valentino’s magnificent pre-fall show in Tokyo last November, has blossomed into something more meaningful, as Piccioli featured a substantial number of Takahashi’s prints in both his fall men’s and women’s collections, and Takahashi showed some of them in his own men’s show as well. While it’s hardly unusual for an insider streetwear label like Undercover to relate to a couture house like Valentino in…
