‘Looking in & around’ and initiating a thought process on the landscape discourse in India, New Delhi based landscape architect and guest editor of the special section Suneet Mohindru introduces the subject, thematically stringing together various sets of thoughts. In his article, he observes that the prime objective is to try to integrate the nuances of landscape architecture as a “phenomenon, thought and object”, both in education and professional practice. We consider this to be a worthwhile cause and sustained deliberations and thoughts, evolving from ever changing contexts will contribute to the theoretical base while the profession grows in its breadth and depth. Further in this issue, senior practitioner-academician, Prem Chandavarkar, shares his views on a set of varied subjects including architecture profession and education, inspirational models in today’s world and…

canals as urban green lungs

SEARCH WORKSHOP 18 CONDUCTED BY SEARCH - TRUST FOR SUSTAINABLE EDUCATION AND ACTION IN ARCHITECTURE IN COLLABORATION WITH IIT KHARAGPUR | 21-27 DECEMBER, 2018 Kolkata’s original canal (Khal in Bengali) network, the backbone of the drainage system in the city for about three centuries, has deteriorated over the years. Unchecked encroachments, growth and related landfill, lack of periodic maintenance, poor management of waste-water and solid wastes being few of the reasons. Tolly Nullah, named after Colonel William Tolly, an officer of the British East India Company, was an old channel of Adi Ganga, which was dredged and desilted to make a waterway connecting Calcutta port to the rivers of eastern Bengal. The canal, which was once navigable, lost its vigour since the 1960s and a heritage stream was gradually transformed into…

landscape discourse looking in & around

Our conversations at the jury for the Students' Competition-2017 constituted by the Landscape Foundation extended over a dialogue between me and Geeta on issues concerning landscape education, professional work and the role of the Landscape Journal. That’s when we hit upon the idea of putting together thoughts and impressions on what would be called ‘Landscape Discourse’ and bring out a dedicated issue of the magazine. I started off by first penning my thoughts into a piece that would encapsulate my understanding of the scope and breadth of issues that we engage with as practicing and teaching professionals. This ended up producing an extensive list of potential topics that necessitated deliberation. The web of conversation extended to invite fellow professionals to contribute their opinions with the objective of initiating an enduring…

land scape discourse

Meanings The word ‘landscape’ is endowed with multiple meanings. The mention of term conjures up different images and interpretations. Being the arena where life exists, displaying a web of complex relationships between life and its environment, landscape would naturally imply more than simply a setting. It lives, or rather is life itself! Nature and its processes continue their flow over the planet. Plants and animals derive direct sustenance from land. Civilizations have thrived over varied settings, displaying a range of relationship from physical orientation, sustaining life and its activities as well as spiritual connection between what meets the eye and that which is there and yet elusive. Bringing the discussion closer to the intent of this writing, it is interesting to point out that ‘landscape’ as a noun would naturally mean a…

landscape architects how relevant are we and whom do we serve

We stand at a critical juncture in time in the country concerning social, environmental, education, health and infrastructure issues in a shrinking democracy. As a country, we are 1.36 billion and projected to be 1.70 billion in the next 30 years. A country where 50% of its population is below the age of 25 and 65% below the age of 35. Ours is a country, where one in every five Indian, lives below poverty level (BPL) and gets less than rupees 140 per day. Our BPL population is little short of the entire population of USA. We are all aware of these issues at a personal level and are concerned. Can we as landscape architects contribute to alleviating this, is something we need to contemplate? Though it is challenging to…
