editor’s letter

Working with celebrities on cover shoots, we often have to be prepared for unusual or elaborate requests: eye-wateringly expensive platters of crudités (absolutely NO cucumber); a tower of macrobiotic snacks that never get eaten; bodyguards; limos with blacked-out windows; a particular brand of fluffy white bathrobe – these are just some of the ones I’ve signed off over the years. This month’s cover star Brie Larson had a request of a different kind, though. She asked to be interviewed by a young writer who she’d struck up a conversation with on Twitter. Being used to commissioning journalists at the top of their game who we know can ask the difficult questions, this didn’t exactly sit comfortably with me. However, when Brie explained how she is trying to break the mould…

and now we rise up

The breakthrough congresswomen On 6 November 2018, Deb Haaland (pictured here with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the youngest ever woman to join Congress) made history by becoming one of the first Native American women to be elected. Here, she reflects on a historic moment for women. ‘In Washington DC for my first week of orientation, I met a Native American mother with two teenage girls from South Dakota. When they saw me, they started crying. We were all crying. My win meant a lot to people, and I have a responsibility to ensure I represent my district in the best way. For me, the real race was in the primary election last June. There were six of us on the democratic ballot and it was tough, but I knew that if I won, I…

meet me in paris

In 2016, photographer Mary McCartney embarked on a photography project with comedian Phyllis Wang. After two days staying at Wang’s apartment, McCartney came away with the material for her new book, Mary McCartney: Paris Nude. A mix of both black and white and colour, the photographs are the first full series of nudes in McCartney’s career. This month, they are released, accompanied by an essay from Elephant Magazine editor-at-large Charlotte Jansen, on the history of the nude in photography and the female gaze. For McCartney, who has previously exhibited at Gagosian gallery in New York and London’s National Portrait Gallery, the book continues her examination of aspects of femininity through the lens. The collection of pictures showcases the trust and closeness required from the photographer and the subject, and the candid…

‘our courts are failing vulnerable women’

‘# METOO WAS A RESPONSE TO THE LAW’S FAILURES’ Baroness Helena Kennedy is one of the UK’s leading human rights QCs. Here, she reveals why women are still reluctant to report incidents of rape, stalking and domestic violence, and how if they do have the courage to come forward, they are regularly let down by the very legal system that should be protecting them ‘Since a young age, I’ve wanted to draw attention to the plight of women who don’t have a voice. As a young female lawyer from a working-class background in the early 70s (rare, since there were only around seven per cent of women at the Bar at that time), I learned a lot, and fast. I’d regularly find myself in court thinking, “Why did the judge say that?”…

CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME? ★★★★ Witty and touching, Marielle Heller’s film stars Melissa McCarthy as biographer-turned-forger Lee Israel. ON THE BASIS OF SEX ★★★ Felicity Jones is the iconic Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the future US Supreme Court Justice, fighting a landmark 70s discrimination case in Mimi Leder’s legal drama. Inspiring. THE KINDERGARTEN TEACHER ★★★★ Maggie Gyllenhaal plays a primary teacher who finds a child prodigy in her class in this sad tale. Sara Colangelo directs with real dexterity. CAPERNAUM ★★★★ Some dubbed this ‘poverty porn’ when it played in Cannes, but truthfully Nadine Labaki’s stark drama about kids in Beirut slums is incredibly powerful. You will weep.…

are you a basic witch?

Four months after Netflix’s remake of Sabrina The Teenage Witch launched, black magic is experiencing an unprecedented surge in popularity. The tag #witchesofinstagram now boasts 2 million posts (and rising), and ’grammers like @thehoodwitch (382k followers) and @light_witch (122k) are proving that witches can be influencers, too. Even high-street retailers such as Topshop and Urban Outfitters are offering the kind of traditional ‘Wiccan’ accessories (think pentagon jewellery and spell books) that would have got you executed in the 1400s. According to Semra Haksever, author of Love Spells: Rituals, Spells And Potions To Spark Your Romantic Life, our growing obsession with witchcraft isn’t all that surprising. ‘In many ways, it’s just another way of exploring wellness and spirituality,’ she says. Hot on the heels of mindfulness, crystals and reiki, is our growing…
