what we love about december

1. COOL AS ICE Scandals, it turns out, aren’t always as they seem. See: I, Tonya, the filmfestival darling, starring Margot Robbie, that tells the triumphant and tragic life story of Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding, in theaters December 8. 2. OUT OF THIS WORLD Dreamy indie-pop singer/songwriter Lana Del Rey is hitting the road. Her LA to the Moon tour (featuring guests Jhené Aiko and Kali Uchis) kicks off January 5 with 24 stops across North America. Sing your lungs out to her latest album, Lust for Life. 3. GOOD TALK What’s better than a juicy celebrity interview by a veteran reporter who knows how to get a great scoop? An entire book of them. editor’s note treat yourself

As we near the end of 2017, I look back in awe. I’m inspired by the millions of courageous women who’ve used #metoo to share their stories of harassment and fight for gender equality. That conversation-starting hashtag is just one of the 50 badass moments we highlight starting on page 111 (along with Sloane Stephens’ U.S. Open win, Nancy Pelosi shutting down male lawmakers trying to silence her, and many, many more). Despite these triumphs, 2017 didn’t wrap itself up in a bow. There is still more work to be done, but if these moments are any indication of what’s to come, then bring on 2018. No matter how organized and productive I feel every fall, I’m always surprised by how fast the holidays arrive. So I decided to ask top…

HOMETOWN: Anaheim, California. CURRENT RESIDENCE: Los Angeles. DRESS REHEARSAL: “I just shot in Milk Studios yesterday for my sunglasses line, so I’m warmed up and ready for you guys!” said Stefani. She arrived in distressed Prps Goods & Co. blue denim overalls, a red tank top by Isabel Marant, Gucci slip-on sneakers, and her signature red lip. ROCK OUT: The day’s soundtrack included “Wild Thoughts” by DJ Khaled featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller, and “Thunder” by Imagine Dragons. BEAUTY ROUTINE: “We all love Veruschka von Lehndorff ’s ’60s vibe, so I wanted to re-create that by defining Gwen’s eyes and softening the lips,” says makeup artist Gregory Arlt. After perfecting Stefani’s skin with matte foundation, Arlt swiped peach shadow on her eyelids and intensified the creases with a deep navy…

fashion gives back vision quest

The evil eye has long been one of the world’s most recognized symbols, spanning thousands of years and countless cultures. Ancient Greeks and Romans believed the malevolent stare could cause illness. In the Bible, the expression is synonymous with envy, jealousy, and covetousness. Women in South India paint black kohl around their eyelids to shield themselves, but the most widely used defense against it is talismans of the same shape (ironically also called the evil eye), thought to deflect its negative energies. “The evil eye is meant to protect those who wear it, but it’s also emotionally comforting and captivating to look at,” says Gigi Hadid, who used the mystical motif as inspiration for her latest collaboration with Stuart Weitzman. With help from new creative director Giovanni Morelli, she designed…
