more is never enough by bill bensley

The architects who originally designed Hotel de la Coupole in 1914 wanted to pay tribute to Vietnam and their French homeland through a constant comparison between Parisian Haute Couture and traditional Hill Tribe garments. The result was an enchanting palace in the clouds, embellished with 50 shades of mustard. It integrated the sparkling colours, patterns and textures of the region’s minority tribes with the sophistication of haute couture in the 1920s and 1930s French. The recent renovation by Bill Bensley pays tribute to that original approach: “The French Civil Authority around 1914 moved all of its offices to Sapa for the summer. They brought with them the French touch. Inspired by French ‘motifs du jour’, we added a Sapa twist, telling the story of the French living amongst the hill tribes…

a match made in heaven breitling and bentley: driving together into the future

Breitling CEO Georges Kern is excited about continuing the partnership with Bentley. He commented: “Bentley and Breitling share so many values. Both companies are known for quality, performance, and design excellence, and both can build on powerful historical legacies. It’s an ideal partnership, and, after more than 15 years, it is a pleasure to add another chapter to it.” In announcing the renewal of its long-standing partnership with Bentley, Breitling said that it would be integrating special Bentley editions into its core product offering rather than in a separate Breitling for Bentley collection. The first of these extraordinary watches is the Premier B01 Chronograph 42 Bentley British Racing Green. Powered by Breitling’s flagship Manufacture Calibre 01 in-house mechanical movement, which is visible through a unique transparent caseback with a metalised Bentley…

hip-pop jiyu spa

Before starting the intensive design process, Shanghai Hip-pop Design asked themselves some key questions. “Does the world need one more spa? One more or less similar and imitative experience? Should we give in to those general ideas about spas? Why not extend the design field and challenge the widely accepted criteria? We decide that it was time to make a difference and to create a romantic, poetic and fantastic dream. We took the seemingly understated and ordinary word ‘feeling’ as the key to the design of the 2000 m2 Jiyu Spa.” They continue: “According to Freud, experience is an instant fantasy. It is a recollection of the past. A recollection of what has been achieved and it is also a feeling of the present: an image that was previously stored.” In the Jiyu Spa,…

lenny kravitz nolita vibes

“MUSIC AND DESIGN ARE VERY SIMILAR. THEY’RE BOTH SCULPTURAL AND LAYERED AND COME FROM NOTHING. YOU START WITH A BASE, AND THEN YOU BUILD ON TOP OF IT.IN THE END, YOU HAVE A MOOD. A VIBE. SOMETHING THAT MAKES YOU FEEL DIFFERENTLY THAN YOU DID BEFORE.” LENNY KRAVITZ Lenny Kravitz explains his underlying thoughts. “The 1980s were an impassioned, indulgent, expressive time in New York City. A time of explosive artistic expansion, invigorated living, and an art and music scene that reflected the changing international landscapes. The galleries, nightclubs, and streets of downtown New York were the epicentre of all that was happening and cool. It’s no coincidence then that my first Manhattan apartment was downtown, in SoHo, on Broome Street.” “Downtown New York City was the place for me. When I…

the belle époque revived

From the outside it looks as if the house was built in the ‘Belle’ Époque” period of the 19th century, in the then fashionable style. Nothing could be further from the truth: It was built at the beginning of the 21st century, with both the utmost precision and history in mind. It is the house of Gina and Peter, who built it stone for stone, detail after detail and with great enthusiasm, assisted by artisans and professionals, including Patrick Brugman. The house lies in Landsmeer, a village a little to the north of the city of Amsterdam. It is a place where, at the start of the last century, a joiner’s still stood. It had first been noted in a history book written in 1326, which was mainly concerned with the…
