the sea whisperer

Manu knew she was a whale in her past life. Or if you don’t believe in past life then she had to be a whale in human form in this life. Remember those old-time radios where you had to catch the frequency by turning the antenna? Manu’s ears seemed to have a built-in antenna that could pick up this low frequency whale sonar and she tuned into these conversations each time she played her flute. The first time Baba had given her the flute, the villagers of Bunbuna Gaon had laughed. What would a deaf girl do with a flute? But Baba held her fingers and showed her how to feel music. Melody pulled a face. A husband was definitely NOT on her birthday list. ‘Daaaaaad,’ she moaned. ‘I don’t want to get married. Not now. Maybe not ever …’ ‘Well, you are a princess and this isn’t about what you want,’ King Crotchet. ‘Do you think I wanted to marry your mother?’ Queen Harmony gave him a swift kick under the table to remind…

into our world

15 JANUARY A few months ago, being deaf wasn’t exactly considered an advantage in life. Things have changed a bit since then! The other kids are struggling, having to learn sign language so fast, now that their lives depend on it. But I went deaf when I was five, after a fever. I started learning sign language aged six. I’m eleven now so I’ve been doing it for five years. There’s hardly a word I don’t know. The other kids used to think it was ‘that weird signing thing’ I did. Now they need to learn it so fast, they spend a good few hours of each school day on it. They’re safe at school because the classrooms are soundproofed. It’s when they go outside that it gets risky. Our school is…
