colour my life

I had been feeling like a bit of a design impostor having never visited Milan during Salone del Mobile – the annual world showcase of interior design. But this year I finally got to go, and it was magnifico! I was fortunate to have Scott Fisk and Angus Dawson of Dawson & Co as my travel companions for a couple of days to preview the Noble Souls collection by Timothy Oulton. Along with soaking up the dynamic design offerings, we indulged in delicious pasta and vino whenever the opportunity arose! Salone del Mobile, the original Milan Furniture Fair, may have lent its name to this event (although it’s generally referred to as ‘the festival’), but in reality the furniture fair was a mere support act to the myriad installations and exhibitions…

When it comes to your neutrals for 2018, off-whites are anything but banal. Think Out Of Africa, sun-baked dunes, all the romantic beauty of the desert. Paired with a palette of forest greens and safari-esque khaki, finished with hints of copper, gold and ochre, it’s an adventurous way to add tonal variation and bring warmth to your home. Whitewashed woods help to bring light into your living areas and pair well with almost any colour palette. This light and white neutral is the perfect base on which to add earthy colour pops such as forest green, cedar and dusty tans. INTERIOR TIPS • Take inspiration from nature’s earthy tones and bring in shades from the beach, bush and desert to create a palette full of warmth and life. • Resene wallpaper adds both tone and…

purple & olive

Ultra Violet – or more specifically, Pantone 18-3838 – is the Pantone Colour of the Year for 2018. Intergalactic, mysterious and moody, this blue-based purple is easier to pepper throughout your home than it may first appear. Purple-toned lighting pulled through meditative spaces brings a juxtaposition of calming energy to a room, while more vibrant pops of this shade in furniture and furnishings create the opportunity to let your individual style shine through. Mix with olive green – purple’s direct opposite on the colour wheel – for the perfect match. It’s true what they say, opposites do attract. Complex and contemplative, Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now.– Pantone Color Institute…

SO REFINED Dramatically dark floors with natural wood grains create a sense of quality from the feet up. Further this with elemental furniture, from a moody black marble table to a golden lampstand. A tactile, rounded couch can add a sense of soft comfort in the room.Sourced raw from the earth, the shards of rock crystal that form Timothy Oulton’s Elysium ball pendant will disperse light in every direction. It’s a touch of romance that will continue to remain timeless. BLACK MAGIC Matching your furniture legs to the floor is a simple way to make your room feel stylish and cohesive. Take inspiration from your favourite piece of art and highlight elements of the colour palette throughout your living space. Choose warm furniture fabrics to suit your chocolate-brown flooring. A pair of golden lions from Egypt perch on the steps inside the polished front door. Protectors of Yvonne Sanders Antiques store in Auckland, they have seen many treasures come and go; Venetian vases hand-painted with gold flourishes, tortoiseshell Boulle cabinets, Capodimonte porcelain figures frozen in romantic narratives, and myriad crystal chandeliers hoisted up on the converted 1940s warehouse’s exposed timber beams. For 46 years, Yvonne Sanders Antiques has been the destination store for a sensory overload of beautifully unique homewares, where every piece on the shop floor has a story to tell. At 78 years of age, Sanders, a confessed Francophile, is a walking history class in recherché retail.
