DOWNSIZING IS BIG these days. There are multiple reasons why people are opting to live in smaller spaces – convenience, empty nest and location, just to name a few. But chances are they are not downscaling on style. As this issue demonstrates, your home can still have a beautiful and generous heart, despite its modest size. Photographer Christine Bauer has used soft pastels, gentle curves and whitewashed floors to create a feeling of calm weightlessness in her one-bedroomed Munich apartment (page 96), while architect Adriana Natcheva’s tiny London flat (page 108) is a “masterclass in elegant solutions for a small space.” Although by comparison Valeria Carbonaro-Laws’ contemporary Auckland home is far larger, clever configuration and an eye-catching use of colour and mixed materials have created a place that looks and feels…

island time

The crystal clear aqua atolls and white sandy beaches weren’t Imogen Tunniclify e’s lasting impression of the Tahitian Islands. Instead it was the lush and captivating layers of green foliage, the dramatic volcanic landscape and the moodiness of the skies that stayed with Città’s senior designer and provided inspiration for the brand’s SS17/18 collection, Paradise Found. The mystique of the islands and the a€ nity the locals have towards the land itself, too, played a large part in the collection’s conception. “The Tahitians treat the land as an extension of themselves, their bodies and their family,” explains Imogen. “Not as an inanimate object, but Likewise, there is a celebration of texture in the range, through woven rugs, . ne linens, . ugly tufting and enzymewashed fabrics that lend themselves to a worn…

fabric of society

Visit the display suite at 11 Mt Eden Road. Open daily 11am-3pm As Auckland living becomes increasingly dense, the need for green space is amplified. However, few Auckland developments have successfully translated apartment living to the inner suburbs. A new way forward can be found at Fabric of Onehunga. Where residents might once have had big back yards, outdoor living areas at Fabric are split between generous balconies, private courtyards and a landscaped ‘pocket park’ shared with other residents. The new development includes five buildings of 239 low-rise apartments on a brownfield site. The approach does double duty – as well as providing much-needed outdoor space, the design breaks down the bulk of what would otherwise be a large building in a low-rise suburban area. The design is by Ashton Mitchell Architects, with landscaping…
