let’s meet at the fair!

“It may not be the biggest show I’ve been to, but that’s part of the whole charm and attraction” Somehow or other I think I’ve set myself up for a fall by agreeing to enter a fun gundog competition with my black Lab, Sam, at our upcoming three-day Field & Country Fair starting June 10. This exciting new fieldsports gathering being held at Cornbury Park already boasts an impressive gundog line up so just why the organisers decided to slot in an inter magazine challenge between The Field, Shooting Times, Shooting Gazette, Shooting UK, Country Life and, yes, Sporting Gun is beyond me. All I can think is that they want to give the readers a bit of a laugh at our expense. Doubtless it’s going to be a hoot, but let me…

the great country get-together!

Why don’t you come and celebrate everything that’s truly great about British fieldsports, the countryside and our rural way of life at The Field and Country Fair at Cornbury Park in Oxfordshire, from 10 to 12 June. Organised by the publishers of Sporting Gun, Shooting Times, The Field, Shooting Gazette and Country Life, the inaugural Field & Country Fair is a new and genuinely refreshing addition to the sporting calendar. This is a show dedicated to shooting, hunting, fishing and game conservation, which celebrates everything that’s good and true about our unique rural way of life. It’s a great opportunity to take the family out for a fantastic day (or more!) to enjoy the events, features, displays, shopping, good food, great advice and help within the friendly atmosphere created when country people gather. This…

hide discipline

On the face of it, what could be simpler? You don’t want pigeons to spot you as they approach your decoy layout, so you build a screen behind which you sit to prevent them from doing so. On that basis, an article on hide building would be very short indeed, so it got me thinking as to how Paul and I actually construct ours. When we tackle a situation there are so many elements to consider, from the position of the hide to its location in regards to the birds’ flightline, and, also, wind direction. It’s only when I think about what we do, that I realise how many conscious decisions have to be made. Starting with the absolute basic requirement of a hide in the first place – to prevent…

waterfowl watch

“To keep waterfowl happy and healthy, a decent stretch of water is the main ingredient” It was still quite dark, but as a faint red glow crept slowly upwards over the eastern horizon, the first hint of a breeze began to rustle the bed of tall Norfolk reed on the far banks of the water. A cock wigeon whistled close, answered by another, and I could just make out the low growling of unseen females and the occasional whistle of teal somewhere in the darkness beyond. Drowning out the distant chatter of mallard, across the river valley, greylags were already warming up ready for flight. Eager to set off to their early feeding ground away to the east, the bouts of cackling were getting more urgent and prolonged as the sky…

a lot of gun for your money

The question is: “does the Blaser F16 pack the punch that we are all expecting?” Well, let’s find out! Firstly, when I heard Blaser was launching the F16 as its mid-range entry-level gun I was a little worried. As a company renowned for premium high quality products, all…

unashamedly endeavouring

If you haven’t heard of the Royal Berkshire Shooting School then you have probably been living on Mars. The school, founded in 1991, has become synonymous with excellent service, innovative layouts and high profile charity events that have attracted stars of music, television and even royalty. Big names such as Sunseeker, Aston Martin and Range Rover continue to sponsor and support the events. Since starting its first charity event 25 years ago for the Douglas Bader Foundation that saw two Spitfires flying the length of the school’s grounds, £23 million has been raised for various charities. The school was set up by Dylan Williams in 1991 and sold in 2010. However, Dylan remains as Managing Director of the school accompanied by his dedicated team, many of whom have been with the…
