Best known for… The larger-than-life TV naturalist was a household name in the 1970s and 1980s for his shows Bellamy on Botany, Bellamy’s Britain, Bellamy’s Europe, and Bellamy’s Backyard Safari. In 1979, he won the BAFTA Richard Dimbleby Award for best presenter of factual programmes. Other achievements… Thanks to his unmistakable voice, wild hair and beard, he was regularly parodied by impersonators, most famously Sir Lenny Henry with his ‘gwapple me gwapenuts’ catchphrase. David himself also regularly popped up on TV entertainment and chat shows, including Blankety Blank, Multi-Coloured Swap Shop and Parkinson. His most recent appearance was on The Alan Titchmarsh Show in 2012. Family life… David died on 11 December 2019, aged 86. His wife Rosemary passed away in 2018, but he’s survived by four of his five children.…

new SILENT WITNESS Tuesday, Wednesday, 9pm BBC1 Drama A plane crash places a strain on the romance between forensic scientist Nikki (Emilia Fox) and US diplomat Matt (Michael Landes) as Silent Witness returns with an explosive two-parter. ‘An ex-US ambassador who was friends with Matt is on board,’ says Emilia, 45. ‘The crash affects him, because it bears some relation to a family member.’ When Nikki and the team hear two passengers had received death threats, and someone had visited the crash site before them, the plot thickens.
