consistency pays

Congratulations to Charles Caudrelier and his winning crew on Dongfeng, including the sole Brit (Brit/Aussie to be precise) on board, Jack Bouttell, pictured above. The elation etched on their faces as they lifted the huge Volvo Ocean Race trophy was more than proof enough that this victory was hard-fought. In a nine-month long globe-circling series that stretched 11 legs and with bonus points for grabs along the way, as is so often the case in racing, consistency paid. This was a team that was solid, determined, and worked well together from the start, building on lessons learned from their last campaign - and incredibly, their only leg win was the final one, the 970nm sprint into The Hague. Three sailors – Carolijn Brouwer, Marie Riou, Justine Mettraux – have become the…

dongfeng scoops vor nailbiter

Charles Caudrelier’s Dongfeng Race Team has become the first ever Chinese-flagged entry to win the Volvo Ocean Race after the closest finish in the race’s history. The French skipper and his predominantly Franco-Chinese crew had not won a leg before the final sprint from Gothenburg to The Hague but they had displayed impressive consistency, making the podium in almost every leg. A tactical call in the closing stages of the final leg saw Dongfeng split from Mapfre and Brunel, with whom they were tied on points, and finally clinch victory. “I cannot believe it,” exclaimed a visibly delighted Caudrelier after the finish. “Even until the last 10 minutes I was saying something was going to happen. We have had so much frustration over the last nine months, it was really tough.” Mapfre…

imoca 60s in for 2021 volvo

Just days after the Volvo Ocean Race finished, discussion turned to the future, with new race owners, Atlant Ocean Racing Spain announcing a long-rumoured move away from the Volvo Ocean 65 to the IMOCA 60s currently used for solo and short handed events such as the Vendée Globe and Transat Jaques Vabre. The potential collaboration has been on the cards for some time, but even following the announcement there are many questions remaining about how the logistics of retaining the IMOCA rules as we know it while adapting them for fully crewed racing will work. A joint committee is being formed to draft a specific section of the class rules for crewed racing, which aims to retain the long history of technical innovation within the class, but which will include new cost…

ainslie joins gc32 circuit

British America’s Cup Challenger, INEOS Team UK has joined the GC32 circuit with Ben Ainslie at the helm. This is the first series the team’s senior crew has announced involvement in since a change of headline sponsor earlier this year, which saw them step away from their planned TP52 Super Series racing. Within the announcement of the team’s participation in the series was the additional news that they have signed Australian Olympic gold and silver medallist and former wing trimmer for Artemis Racing, Iain ‘Goobs’ Jensen, who joins as a mainsail trimmer, alongside two-times America’s Cup winner Joey Newton (AUS/GBR) who joins as jib trimmer.…

“I’ve watched the [TP52] class evolve and we’re now ready to introduce the same winning performance and ideas seen on [Fast40+] Rán to the TP52 class and SuperSeries in an explosive new design. Shaun Carkeek announces plans to build an innovative new TP52. If the dominant performance of his Rán Fast40+ design is anything to go by, it will be well worth keeping an eye on this development. “Our fantastic team is not only about the sailors - we were the strongest team because of everybody we had working behind us. Each time we started a leg we knew the shore team had done everything for us and so I would like to offer them this victory – thank you to everybody in Dongfeng Race Team.” An emotional Charles Caudrelier thanks everyone after…
