returned West where he served for two more years until his untimely death at the Battle of Platte River Bridge on July 26, 1865. In his honor, the post was later renamed Fort Caspar and the city that grew up around it is present day Casper, Wyoming. While Caspar Collins died tragically, his legacy, besides the city that bears his name, is the treasure trove of letters, maps and drawings that he made throughout his career in the West. It was a West populated by soldiers, native tribes and old mountaineers, and we are all richer for his descriptions of it.…
