giving shorty some love

Old model fourbies, there’s just something about them; lack of comfort, strange noises, driveline wobbles, excessive fuel consumption and 30 year old technology. When put up against a modern day common rail with all the fruit you’d wonder why the heck anyone would be crazy enough to own one, let alone enjoy driving it. However, its undeniable that when Shorty pulls up at my local pub, the punters on the balcony all turn to check the old girl out…say what you will, but old rigs have class.Time and use does take its toll though. And old machinery, while able to soak up a heck of a lot of abuse, needs constant upkeep as the years march on. Shorty was, to put it mildly, looking every bit of its 30 odd…

drive better and break less

The best way to conquer tough tracks is to get a cheap old 4WD that you don’t care about damaging and wheel the ring out of it. Scratch it, dent it or even chuck it on its side, it’s not going to worry you too much. You can then start to muck around with different lines and give yourself the confidence to know what line works and how to drive hard stuff. That would be nice if we all had a play rig, but the reality is that most of us have the one 4WD that we tour in, drive hard tracks with, go to work in and drop the kids at school in.If you are in the same boat as 99% of us, you don’t want to go around…

canopy setup

If you’ve read a few of these columns over the past few issues, you would have noticed I’ve been harping on about weight and canopy setups. Well, one of the main reasons is because I have been heavily researching my own setup and what I want to run. And after changing my mind multiple times, I have finally decided on a canopy for the Luxxy. My ultimate goal for the HiLux was to build a vehicle that would be just as at home wheeling Coffs Harbour for a week as it would be up in the Cape for a month. The reason for that is because I Love touring just as much as I love slow, technical, low range 4WDing. The problem is, it means I need a vehicle that can…

keeping in touch

KEEPING THE RIG YOU’VE GOT“Howdy there Jock, just wiped the sleep from my eyes and read your article on sticking with your current vehicle or upgrading”, explains Rob. “This is a topic I recently spent sleepless hours deciding over. My current vehicle is a Di ZD30 GU which comfortably took myself, the Mrs. and my son to Cape York. It’s a bit of a weapon and touch wood has gas nothing major in repairs besides filling the auto trans with mud. Anything that has needed repairs I’ve managed to fix myself with a bit of google help, and I impressed myself by fitting a Lokka in the front. I recently pondered ‘upgrading’ to a new Ranger, test drove one and wasn’t impressed over the old GU donk. And realistically if…

I’ve fitted most of the gear on the driveway at home, other than a few things that required specialist tools. I removed the tub, and replaced it with a factory D-MAX aluminium tray,…
