12 years strong!

It all started way back in 2007 in the little town of Chillagoe in northern QLD. On a 13 month lap of the big island, I’d been pushed out west due to a tropical cyclone drenching Cairns and my crappy old camper trailer, on the promise of sunny days and dry canvas. So impressed was I with the Chillagoe region, I wrote an article entitled “Give Chillagoe a Go” for a publication called Australian 4WD Monthly. The article was rejected because they wanted me to write a full 12 part series on the trip around Australia instead; I ended up writing a 15 part series which was called “Long Trip in a Shorty”. So my start with this publication was born with issue 107. Over the following two years I chased…

fueling the obsession

Well, it’s pretty hard to know where to start when writing my last column for 4WD Action magazine. I started with 4WD Monthly (what it was called back in 2007) as a very young and keen junior journalist who hardly got a shot at writing articles and mainly had the important jobs like washing 4WDs after trips and writing parts for the email newsletter if I was lucky. I would wear my Akubra hat in photo shoots just to look a little older than I actually was. I mean, who was going to take the word of a young baby-faced journo seriously when they were giving opinions on 4WDs and tips and techniques for driving and mechanical work? When I look back now, it’s almost cringe worthy, but everyone had…

that’s all, folks!

Well here we are, the last ever issue of 4WD Action magazine! Jeez it feels weird to say that. Although I’ve only been the Editor for about a year, I feel extremely grateful that I was able to be a part of 4WD Action magazine until the end. 4WD Action has always been about showing you how to get more from your 4WD for less. Whether that was by showing you the best spots to go that won’t cost the earth, or by showing you how to tackle your next DIY project in your driveway at home; I feel that despite a changing industry, we have never lost those core values. As I’m sure you all know by now, just because the magazine is coming to an end, it doesn’t mean…

keeping in touch

CAPE PREP “Hi guys, love the Youtube shows you’ve been putting up”, explains Mark. “Next year I’m planning to take my family to Cape York for four weeks with a few mates and their families in a convoy. I’ve heard a lot of different opinions on how modified my vehicle needs to be to do the Cape. I have a 2018 Toyota HiLux SR5 and so far the only mods I’ve done are a snorkel, bullbar and a UHF. We’ve already got a great camping setup that works for us as a family so I’m covered there, but the other boys all have modified 4WDs and each one has a different opinion on what to have. What do you suggest I do to my vehicle in order to do the Cape…

the changing shape of media

21 years ago, a couple of special one-off magazines dedicated to the growing hobby of 4WDing spun off into a regular publication then known as 4WD Monthly. Back then, everywhere you looked, 4WDing – particularly the tough, challenging, low-range side of it – was growing massively. Blokes and ladies around the country were bolting big springs and even bigger tyres under their rigs and pointing them at gnarly hills and bogholes, wanting to see what was on the other side, all in the search for that elusive perfect campsite. Soon it wasn’t just a hobby – it was a full-blown addiction and just like the old 4WD Action t-shirts used to say, it was an addiction that had no cure. For more than two decades, we have been at the forefront…
