THIS MONTH’S WINNER Lorinna Scott, from Greystanes, NSW, for her Fleur quilt project: “My inspiration came from Katrina Hadjimichael’s quilt, Fleur, in Homespun Celebrating 150 Issues Collectors’ Edition (November 2015/Vol 16 No 11). When I was looking for my next project, I found this and it seemed perfect to create this beautiful quilt using my leftover ‘French General’ fabrics. The original version had two borders more than mine, but it proved to be a great solution for using my stash. My quilt was professionally quilted by Quilt Me Quilts in an overall feather pattern, which enhanced the design beautifully. While I’m enjoying my new quilt, I’ll look forward to yet another inspiring issue of a great magazine. Thank you Homespun.” Congratulations to Lorinna for her great effort. As the winner this month, she…

CROCHET COMFORT ZONE Why have 2D when you can have squishy, comfy, puffy, 3D crochet? Good to look at and bottom-friendly to sit on. Plus, this honeycomb design from Bethany Dearden is an inventive new way of creating chair cushions. And that’s always to be applauded. But before you can sit on it, you’ll need to stitch it. could this be the world’s longest embroidery? – you can help make it longer

The Embroiderers’ Guild NSW aims to “encourage the art of embroidery while maintaining a high standard of design and technique”. Founded in 1957, its headquarters are in Concord West (Sydney), where members gather for meetings and to shop for supplies and administration takes place. The building also has a specialist library and a collection of historical and contemporary embroideries. However, the old office was no longer up to the task, requiring an upgrade to meet current building codes. Visionary members saw the opportunity to do far more. It could also include gallery space for exhibitions, purpose-built classrooms, an additional storey, a lift for better access and more, becoming an architect-designed world-class centre of excellence for embroidery, no less, but costing at least $1.5m. A generous bequest got things started, and a…

Hack That Tote by Mary Abreu, US$24.95 This book is presented as 10 variations on a pattern for a basic tote bag, but that seems to undersell it. It’s certainly not a book that provides instructions for a huge variety of different bags, but equally, these projects aren’t ‘just totes’ made in different colours and sporting different embellishments: there’s much more value here than that. There’s some very useful information up front about how to modify a bag pattern (even though that work has been done for you in this book), as well as an overview of different fabrics, interfacings and stabilisers, bag hardware and design elements to use. Instructions are provided for the basic tote bag and the ‘hacks’, each of which comes with its own detailed instructions and lots…
