an appetite for italian

Chef Umberto Bombana picks up a plump truffle and deftly slices paper-thin slivers over three small bowls of risotto. Heads turn as an intense, intoxicating aroma permeates the busy dining room. The lucky recipients, a young couple from Tokyo for whom this meal at the chef’s Otto e Mezzo restaurant in Hong Kong is a holiday highlight, record the performance excitedly on their smartphones. Sandro Brusco, Bombana’s restaurant manager, pours a smooth-as-velvet Barolo into two voluminous crystal wine glasses, explaining to the Japanese pair why that vintage is particularly appropriate to accompany the risotto al tartufo. Many customers are enjoying the restaurant’s degustation menu, which offers five courses of elegantly presented delicacies, but those willing to spend the money have chosen from the truffle listing. Portions are manageable, allowing diners to enjoy…

ba in talks to codeshare with chinese airlines

BRITISH Airways (BA) has initiated talks with China Eastern and China Southern to discuss the possibility of codesharing on flights between Europe and China. Willie Walsh, chief executive of BA’s parent company IAG, hopes that some codeshare agreements can be completed this year. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Walsh noted that mainland travel is on the rise, and the absence of a domestic Chinese carrier in the Oneworld alliance has prompted BA to seek external partnerships. britishairways.com…

1 THE BUND Once a muddy riverbank where boats unloaded and took on heavy bales of merchandise via rickety wooden planking, this 1.5-kilometre stretch of the Huangpu River has morphed into one of the most visited of China’s many tourist sites – in fact, foreigners will feel distinctly outnumbered as they wander down the broad pedestrian promenade that fronts onto the river, dodging hawkers and snapping photos of groups of Chinese ballroom dancing or doing the fan dance. Starting at Suzhou Creek and the iron arcs of Garden Bridge, you’ll pass through Huangpu Park – originally open to foreigners only – and its Monument to the People’s Heroes, a concrete pyramid that seems more suited to the modern architectural jungle of the Pudong district on the river’s far side. Lining the Bund’s…

MALAYSIA Airlines (MAB) posted a profit in February 2016, marking its first positive return in years. Revenue has improved while costs are down, said MAB chief executive Christoph Mueller, who also announced that the carrier is on track to meet its goal of breaking even by 2018. Under Mueller, MAB has been through a US$1.5 billion overhaul, which saw it cut more than 6,000 jobs and axe unprofitable routes.
