going for gold

A short hop south of Brisbane on Australia’s eastern coast, the 57km stretch of pristine beachfront coastline known as the Gold Coast is bathed in glorious sunshine for more than 300 days a year. Behind its beachfront visage, however, the once sleepy seaside town has grown into a booming metropolis – the sixth largest in Australia. Served by two international airports – Gold Coast International Airport (OOL) and Brisbane International Airport (BNE) – the city welcomed a record-breaking 1.1 million international travellers for business and leisure last year. In April, the Gold Coast will gain even more international exposure when it hosts the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The 11-day elite competition will be the second-largest sporting event ever held in Australia (after the Sydney Olympics in 2000), welcoming 6,600 athletes and team officials…

collective strength

Among the many acronyms, phrases and travel industry jargon that business travellers have to contend with, perhaps the most common in recent years is “bleisure”, the slightly unseemly portmanteau indicating the combination of business trips with down time. The rise of this (irritating-to-many) term does have some basis. In a survey released earlier this year, Booking.com for Business found that 49 per cent of business travellers in 2016 extended a work trip to enjoy the destination more, with 27 per cent intending to do so again in 2017. One sector of the travel and hospitality industry ready to capitalise on this trend is independent hotels. An independent hotel is generally defined as a hotel that is owned and operated individually and not by a larger company. However, over the past decade numerous…

kerry hotel hong kong

BACKGROUND The Kerry Hotels brand is part of the Shangri-La Group. Opened in April, this is the group’s fourth property in Hong Kong. WHERE IS IT? Next to the Hung Hom pier (connected by ferry to North Point district on Hong Kong Island) and a short walk from the famous Whampoa land-locked “ship” shopping centre and MTR station. WHAT’S IT LIKE? It’s a 16-storey new-build that calls itself an urban resort and creates that feeling as soon as you drive up the ramp under the porte-cochère and see the extensive harbour views, swimming pools and greenery on the terraces in front of the hotel. Designed by André Fu, (known for his work at Hong Kong’s Upper House hotel and Singapore’s Fullerton Bay), the lobby is spectacular but also deferential to the view…

GHOST PASSENGER I want to provide feedback about how Singapore Airlines makes redemption flights difficult. I was on a business trip to Hong Kong flying SQ860 on February 6, 2017 and planned for my wife to join me on a redemption ticket. An online booking was made in January 2017, but I was only able to secure a return flight for my wife. She was put on the waitlist for the Hong Kong outbound flight. I made subsequent phone calls and emailed the PPS hotline to follow up and was advised each time that the flight was full and the waitlist could not be confirmed. I made a last attempt on February 5, and highlighted that during my online check-in, I noticed that there was an empty seat (43F) next to mine (43G). The staff…
