cross stitch gold

“Autumn days when the grass is jewelled…” I’ve been humming that familiar tune for weeks, inspired by the beautiful projects in this issue which bring together pumpkins, leaves, wildlife and other autumnal imagery. From Carol Thornton’s lifelike squirrel (p4) to a whimisical fox hanging (p34) and golden Cinderella portrait (p12), I think you’ll be charmed by these seasonal delights! And if, like me, you can’t get enough of the changing colours, then don’t miss our leafy table runner (p44) and romantic scene of a couple strolling through the park (p18). It hardly seems possible that we’re bringing you Christmas designs already – but, we do like to give you a head-start on your festive stitching! So get cracking with our Christmas bear greetings on page 60, a wintry cushion (p50) and…

country charm

Watercolour artist Carol sketches and paints her gorgeous works of art before turning them into cross stitch designs. She creates charts for various magazines and has attracted legions of fans who love her distinctive style of artwork, which translates beautifully into cross stitch. “Snuggle up in the evenings to stitch this charming squirrel – it’s a really heartwarming design to ease you into the shorter days.” Stitcher’s guide This design is worked on 28-count Misty Morning evenweave over two threads of the fabric using 30 shades of stranded cotton. Cross stitch is in two strands of thread, and there are lots of fractional stitches for extra detail throughout. Backstitch defines the design in one strand, and French knots are also worked in one strand of thread. This project is recommended for experienced stitchers. How…

cinderella sparkle

Jenny has been passionate about the creative arts since she was a small child, and went on to study graphic design at university. Soon after, she landed a job as a needlework designer for DMC Creative World, and became a freelance designer a couple of years later. She loves being able to work with cross stitch every day! “I loved working on this beautiful project so much, it often kept me up until midnight – just like Cinderella! I hope you enjoy stitching it for someone special.” Stitcher’s guide This design is worked on 28-count white evenweave over two threads of the fabric in 34 shades of stranded cotton and two shades of metallic thread. Cross stitch is in both one and two strands of cotton or metallic, while backstitch defines the design…

a walk in the park

Maria has always had a passion for needlecraft, since learning to sew as a child on her greatgrandmother’s Singer machine. After art college she landed a job as a printer, which led to her becoming DMC’s first in-house designer. She is now an independent designer and lives in the Midlands with her two sons, Lincoln and Hudson. “With its richly coloured leaves, this scene has a golden glow and makes me feel all warm inside – the perfect antidote to colder evenings.” Stitcher’s guide This design is worked on 14-count white aida in 31 shades of stranded cotton. Cross stitch is in two strands of thread. There are no fractionals, but there is some half cross stitch in two strands for the path and in the grass. Backstitch defines the figures and park…

penguin’s snow day!

Fiona has always had a passion for art and design from an early age, and loves the creativity in her role as Technical Editor for Cross Stitch Gold, as well as our sister magazines, Cross Stitch Crazy and The World of Cross Stitching. “Start this sweet penguin without delay, so you’ve got plenty of time to finish it, make the stocking, and fill it with gifts, before Christmas Eve!” Stitcher’s guide This design is worked on 28-count ice blue evenweave over two threads of the fabric in 17 shades of stranded cotton. Cross stitch is in two strands of thread, with fractionals adding extra detail. Backstitch defines the design in one strand, and French knots are also worked in one strand of thread.
