innovations go big

I clearly recall those early days of my deer hunting journey. If I wasn’t painting my archery sight pins with white nail polish to improve that aiming device, I was devouring every printed word on the new fangled climbing tree stands, softlead rifle bullets or “replaceable blade” broadheads. Simpler times, no doubt. There might not be any of those remnant gear items in this 30th anniversary edition of our Equipment Annual, but you can rest assured that what’s new for 2021 will amaze you just as much as I was amazed by those old products back in the day. Among this year’s advancements are these three main categories: 1. Intuitive Optics There’s too much going on in the atmosphere to describe it in just a paragraph, but let’s start by saying today’s…

serve it up straight

Handloading puts you in company with people keen to wring all the accuracy and power they can from “powder and ball.” Handloads distinguish the students from the dabblers. According to companies that make tools and components, the handloading market is both strong and resilient. An unending parade of new cartridges keeps shooters at the bench. Not that choices in boxed ammo have diminished. The 1959 “Shooter’s Bible” listed 78 Winchester and Remington loads in its rifle ballistics table. Hornady’s current cartridge roster boasts 265! You will find ammo for nearly every task, from popping plates furlongs distant to stopping buffalo a heartbeat away. But handloaders will not be denied their fun. “Too few people ask questions.” With that, Robin Sharpless disarmed me. He is executive VP of Redding Reloading out of Cortland, New York.…

optics trade-offs

Compromise is a delicate thing. We all want what we want, and we don’t want to give up a lot to achieve it. When it comes to our hunting gear, many of us are more rigid in our demands than in other areas of our lives. Try as we might, when it comes to hunting optics, there will always be compromise. While we would all like to top our favorite deer rifle with a crystal-clear 1-20x32 scope that weighs just 8 ounces and comes in at only 11 inches in length, the reality of optical physics means we will have to choose what is really important when it comes time to select our scope. So how do you prioritize your hunting scope? Do you need magnification above all else? Do you need…

compound bows for 2021

If you haven’t set foot in an archery pro shop in more than five years, you’re in for a shock. The quality of the compound bows from a plethora of manufacturers is so much better than it was back then it’s staggering. All of the major bow makers hype their products, and unless you are a hands-on bow freak who shoots new bows every year, it’s hard to fully comprehend how good they all are. That makes shopping for a new bow somewhat daunting. Where and how do you start? Here are some pointers 1. Don’t shop with a closed mind. Your buddies all might like Brand X, but this might not be the best bow for you. 2. Don’t just run out and buy one without doing your homework. For some reason…
