TRENDS COME AND GO, BUT TIMELESS DESIGN IS ALWAYS IN STYLE. As you plan your dream kitchen or bath, keep the latest design trends in mind (we love the mixed metals we’ve been seeing lately, as well as the colorful ranges), but be sure to focus on how you actually use the space. Do you want to welcome friends and family into your kitchen work zone? Add a prep sink for kitchen helpers. Do you need to cook for a crowd? A professional-style range and a set of wall ovens will give you plenty of flexibility. Do you dream of a relaxing bathroom? A soaking tub and steam shower will do the trick. Do you need to make sure two people can get ready at the same time? Double vanities…

what’s cooking in the kitchen

professional-style APPLIANCES You don’t need a Michelin star to cook professional-quality fare. Home chefs can now enjoy commercial-grade capabilities like built-in temperature probes, extralarge ovens, infrared broilers, and specialized cooking modes for everything, including roasting the Thanksgiving turkey or dehydrating apple slices. STATEMENT RANGES Skip the stainless steel and go bold. Today’s trendiest kitchens feature statement ranges in not-so-subtle shades like neon orange and brilliant blue, adding a playful twist to this hardworking appliance. Choose an alluring accent color, or match colorful cabinetry with a custom paint job. COOKTOP BASICS WHICH TYPE OF BURNER IS RIGHT FOR YOU? GAS PROS: Powered by natural gas or propane, gas burners respond to changes in heat almost instantly. Many professional chefs prefer gas burners for their quick warmup times and precise control while cooking. Gas burners are suitable for nearly…

fit for a crowd

MINIMALISM HAS ITS PLACE—AND THAT PLACE IS NOT IN HEIDI ALLEN’S HOUSE. “I see these clean-lined kitchens with no upper cabinets, no room for glasses and plates, and I wonder, Where do people put stuff?” she says. “I can’t live without cabinets.” Thankfully, she doesn’t have to. The storage-rich, well-appointed kitchen in the new Dallas home she shares with husband Jeff abounds with cabinets: upper cabinets, lower cabinets, even cabinets disguised to look like they’re part of the furniture-style island. Heidi has plenty of room to store everything she needs for her favorite pastime: entertaining oodles of friends and family, including the couple’s four grown children. While Heidi cooks, she can interact with the kids, who love to perch at the island (and charge their phones at cleverly hidden outlets). The island’s…

a natural choice

MOTHER NATURE DOESN’T EVEN BOTHER KNOCKING. Her verdant greens come right in through the big kitchen window at Esti and Jeff Stein’s Atlanta home—and create somewhat of a color conundrum. “When we were ready to renovate, Jeff thought we couldn’t go wrong with a white kitchen,” Esti says. “But I was hesitant—the reflection from outside makes neutrals inside look green.” Interior designer Bradley Odom of Dixon Rye saw the problem. Looking at the backyard nature-scape, he also saw the solution. “He said, ‘Let’s embrace the green,’” Esti recalls. “I was inspired by views of the pond area in their backyard,” Odom says. “I wanted to bring that lush, warm green in.” And so he did, coating cabinetry in Farrow & Ball’s “Green Smoke.” Quartz with the look of white marble, used for the backsplash…

old-world appeal

SPLITTING HER TIME BETWEEN CHICAGO AND SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA, has allowed interior designer Kim Scodro to lead a bit of a double life. When she and her husband, Bruce, are in their downtown Chicago apartment, they enjoy an urban lifestyle and eat out most nights at restaurants that are within walking distance. In their Scottsdale house, they’re content to stay put. “We are in the kitchen constantly, whether it’s just us or we’re entertaining,” Kim says. For all the differences between their lives in the Midwest and the desert, one thing is the same: character. Kim wanted her Scottsdale home—especially the kitchen where she envisioned everyone congregating—to have as much warmth and character as her postwar apartment. “I wasn’t going to do something that didn’t bring a patina into it,” she says.…
