MOVIES 1 Bumblebee The new Transformers movie Bumblebee rolls back the clock to 1987, which happens to be the year the original animated series ended its run. Director Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings) restores the yellow shape-shifting robot to a Volkswagen Beetle from that generation, but the Dec. 21 film also includes numerous other shout-outs to the era. Here’s a preview of Bumblebee’s journey to the Big ’80s. -ANTHONY BREZNICAN TV 2 WYNONNA EARP The thrillingly singular, supernaturally charged Western heads into its third season with an army of followers—“Earpers”—behind it, and with good reason. The titular demon-hunter is tasked with protecting the town of Purgatory, leading to a saga of insanely entertaining action, wry humor, and a deeply felt set of character dynamics. The show mixes serial elements with a classic monster-of-the-week…

THE LOST BOYS Some of Bumblebee’s exteriors were shot on the same boardwalk as this flick’s. “Alas, nary a brooding, bleached-blond adolescent vampire could be found,” Knight says. “Disappointing.” BILL MURRAY Before deciding on the VW Beetle, Bumblebee “briefly considers, then rejects, the Urban Assault Vehicle from Stripes,” says Knight. JOHN CARPENTER A local restaurant in the film is called Dragon of the Black Pool, the name of Wang Chi’s Cantonese eatery in Big Trouble in Little China. WARGAMES The robot-hunting government agency Sector 7 in Bumblebee has “advanced” computer systems, a variation on this movie’s nuclear-war WOPR. NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VACATION The pea green, wood-paneled station wagon that belongs to Charlie’s family is inspired by the Griswold Family Truckster.…

Glass is named after Samuel L. Jackson’s character. Would you say he is the film’s protagonist? I would say the protagonist is Elijah’s theory that comic books are based on reality: Is that true or not? The footage screened at CinemaCon in April featured Sarah Paulson as a psychiatrist, Dr. Ellie Staple, treating David, Elijah, and the Horde as if they were delusional. How does she fit in here? She specializes in this particular type of delusion of grandeur, with people who think they’re comic-book characters. It’s kind of the modern-day equivalent of “I think I’m Jesus.” So we’ll get to see David Dunn and Mr. Glass interacting with the many personalities of the Horde? That must have been fun to write. [Laughs] You do, you do. Normally, the writing process is about figuring out…

So what can you tell us about Leta? [Newt and Leta are] friends from childhood when they went to Hogwarts. They have quite a special bond and she was always looked at as an outcast, just as Newt was. Now he’s come back into town and learns she’s become engaged to his brother, Theseus, so that’s an awkward situation. Why awkward? Were Newt and Leta romantically involved? I don’t think it ever went to that place, but Newt has so few friends and connections in his childhood, maybe in his mind it might have gone there? I don’t think it was ever acted upon. But it still feels like a betrayal. And from what I hear, she’s got an undeserved reputation? Yeah, when she walks into a party people do a double take. She’s always…
