Hated, adored… sometimes even ignored: Rafa Benitez has been subjected to all of the above and plenty more in a remarkable coaching career spanning more than 33 years in four countries – though suffice to say, there’s been plenty more love than loathing on English shores. It takes a saintly figure to spend over three years working under Mike Ashley, but Rafa finally reached breaking point last summer, as he let his contract run down at St James’ Park. In an exclusive interview with FourFourTwo – part of our exciting managers special – he tells us the truth about what happened behind the scenes, and why he had to leave Tyneside under a cloud. The Spaniard also reflects on a terrific life in management which has now taken him to Dalian…

The former Manchester United and Everton striker has suggested meeting FFT at a plush private members’ club in London’s Soho district, and American actress Rose McGowan is chatting with friends at the next table. When we head out to the street for some pictures, our photo shoot is momentarily gatecrashed by a true A-lister: former Crystal Palace striker and manager Dougie Freedman, who walks past obliviously while talking on his Bluetooth headset. Get out of the way, Freedman! Saha lives down in the south of France these days, but he has made a brief trip back to England as part of his work with AxisStars, the firm he founded after…

1 HARRY, IS THAT YOU? Euro 2020 is just seven months away now, and that can mean only one thing: Skillzy on tour. The tournament’s official mascot was unveiled back in March. He’s a curious humanoid character with a name a bit like a rapper’s and a head even bigger than Harry Maguire’s. Essentially he’s the modern-day Frank Sidebottom, with bonus ball-juggling prowess. Skillzy is now making his way around the Euro 2020 venues, watching Ireland play in Dublin and jetting to Saint Petersburg to greet Russia midfielder Aleksandr Yerokhin, Euro 2000 winner Christian Karembeu and Southend United manager Sol Campbell. The mascot then flew to Rome, where he did a spot of ball-juggling outside the Colosseum, lobbed a coin into the Trevi Fountain and, exhausted, sat down to tuck into some spaghetti. Next…

Criciuma 0 Gremio 0 June 2, 1991 Copa do Brasil Final “This match began my path of winning important titles. We, Criciuma, were at home to Gremio in the second leg of the Copa do Brasil final. Gremio were very strong but we drew 0-0: that won us the title because we’d scored an away goal in the first leg, drawing 1-1. We were undefeated from beginning to end [10 matches] and winning the tournament without losing a game was a historic achievement. It was also the first important title won by a team from the state of Santa Catarina, and my first ever major title as a coach.” Palmeiras 2 Deportivo Cali 1 June 16, 1999 Copa Libertadores Final “It was the second leg in the final of the Copa Libertadores, the most important…
