there’s no time like the present

Not so long ago, vegan food was a bit ‘out there’. Same with open-plan living. Or finding love online in mid-age. Not any more. Now we know that bread-crumbed tofu is delicious and that romance could be waiting at the click of a mouse. And who wouldn’t want a freestanding bath in their bedroom? It’s about the way we live now – which is what this month’s issue is dedicated to. Times have changed – and not just for the younger generations. Today we can all, whatever our age, enjoy the experience. We kick off on p26 by toasting changing attitudes to the way women look, love and live right now. As our writers discover, anything goes. Grow your hair long and have children later in life! Embrace your financial firepower…

Q. What have you been surprised to discover about yourself? A. I’ve hated exercise all my life, so you can imagine mine and everyone else’s shock when I went for my first run aged 54! I now jog three times a week and love it. JANUARY EVANS That I am able to write a good eulogy. I wrote my nana’s and everyone said the words were wonderful and that it summed her up so well. RACHEL HOWLETT How brave I am. I’ve battled depression and anxiety for nearly 21 years. In that time, I’ve conquered my fear of flying, of not being in control and of social situations. EMMA CHRISTOU I was always a shy person, so I surprised myself when I walked up to a stranger and introduced myself. Five years later and we’re happily married! BEVERLEY…

last year my wife and i finally bought a house together

We’d owned ‘fixer uppers’ before, stepping stones on the way to our forever house. But after almost two decades of blood, sweat and Dulux, we’d saved up enough money to buy a home. It’s as grand as Buckingham Palace (you have to curtsy when you arrive), as impressive as Northanger Abbey (less Gothic intrigue, but lots of emotional intensity) and as welcoming as the House at Pooh Corner (sadly we haven’t found a cuddly talking bear yet). Everything was wonderful until we had to confront one absolute truth. When it comes to home decor, my wife and I are as disparate as Liberace and Hannibal Lecter. From the moment we moved in together many years ago it was clear that we had quite different ideas of how we wanted to live.…

the gh checklist

Mel Giedroyc lives near London with husband, Ben, daughters, Florence, 16, and Vita, 14, and their new – as yet unnamed – adopted dog. How tidy is your house? I’m pretty tidy, everything gets thrown away. I have to do it behind my husband’s back though, because he’s something of a hoarder. When was the last time you personally cleaned your bathroom? I got on my hands and knees a couple of days ago with a cotton bud and delved right into the grouting of the tiled floor. Cook for friends or out for dinner? I am obsessed with my kip, so anything that involves staying at home and not having to go out ticks all of the boxes. I know that I’m never less than five metres away from my dressing gown. What food would you…

‘we’ve got one life – let’s live it!’

‘I just really want to entertain people and I’ve got some fun things to share’ After so many years at the top, Joanna Lumley has earned the right to be just a little bit grand. But there’s not an ounce of grandness about her. When she arrives at the Good Housekeeping cover shoot she is warm and friendly, and excited to start trying on the rails of clothing (‘an ocean of pink and orange, how lovely!’). Now 72, she is busier than ever with filming and campaigning on issues close to her heart. It’s her charm and warmth that have made her such a firm favourite and why she seemed the obvious choice to host the BAFTA film awards this year in the wake of the row around sexual harassment. Now…
