welcome to the issue

WHAT DOES LUXURY mean today? I’ve got two small kids, so for me, a night on the sofa in a pair of new pyjamas watching great TV feels like the ultimate treat. If you’re the same, you’ll enjoy our piece on JOMO dressing (p32) and an insight into the new series of The Crown (p30). But I also believe we’re lucky to be living in an era where we have the luxury of having our voices heard. On p72, we meet nine people who’ve spent 2019 working to change your world, including our supermodel cover star Arizona Muse, who’s finally getting the fashion industry to wake up to the challenge of sustainability. I hope you’ll find them as inspiring as we did… @hattie_brett / feedback@graziamagazine.co.uk…

over to you...

GOOD TO KNOW I read with great interest ‘I’m glad I was diagnosed with ADHD’ (28 Oct). As a society, we are becoming more aware of neurological conditions and have a greater understanding that each individual experiences the world in their own unique way. Getting a diagnosis can be a shock, but also give context to past misunderstandings and help us to move forward. I have had experience of this in my own family recently. Yet again, Grazia is ahead of the wave, and not just in style. Maria Kenny WE DO MIND THE GAP! Bravo! I just read Helen O’Hara’s article on the 20+ year age gap between the awesome Jodie Comer and her on-screen husband in the up and coming film The Last Duel (Jodie’s big new role: should she mind…

keep fighting

People doing the same job should get equal pay. But unfortunately in many cases they don’t. And even though it is unlawful, the difference may be justified if your employer can show there is a material reason for it. My boss used this excuse when I was receiving less than a male colleague doing the same job. Just because he spoke Welsh and I couldn’t – but even he admitted he’d never had cause to speak Welsh once in his job. So I am fully behind Samira Ahmed as she leads the fight against pay discrimination. You go get them Samira.…

Permission to fail? We’ll take that “Good news! Scientists say the key to success is to fail 15% of the time. That means we can afford to have one off-day a week and still be on track for world domination… potentially. The research, led by the University of Arizona, found that getting things right 85% of the time was the perfect amount for fast learning – where things aren’t so hard we give up, but aren’t so easy they get boring. So, if you’ve missed out on a promotion, crashed on your driving test or bankrupted yourself on a winter wardrobe (hopefully not all three on the same day) then give yourself a pat on the back – you might have just unlocked a load of potential.”…

young british women are running out of cash – and so am i

A REPORT PUBLISHED last week established that one in five young British women are in debt ‘all the time’, and nearly 40% struggle to make wages last until the end of the month* . This made me feel young, and not in a good way. Recently, I realised – for the first time in a long time – I wasn’t making enough money. I’d done my VAT return (the worst thing about being a freelance writer is not the deadlines, or the pressure, the staring at a blank screen with no idea how to fill it; it’s not the creative risks, the public vulnerabilities… it’s the admin), which meant I’d spent quality time with my bank statements. Which was how I realised – for various reasons, none of them serious…
