the show must go on…

Stay at home. Only head out for essential items, such as foodstuffs and medicine. Don’t even think about hopping into that Porsche unless you’re a ‘key worker’. These are the messages being thrown at us right now, with good reason, of course. The impact of COVID-19 is plain for all to see, but I’ve lost track of the number of people I’ve spoken to who have misinterpreted government guidance as ‘do nothing’. On the contrary, as outlined by BTCC and Carrera Cup hero, Tim Harvey, in this very issue of GT Porsche, now is the perfect time to head out into the shed, garage or garden and sort through your piles of spares, fix niggles your car has been bugging you with for yonks or fire up the mower and…

sweetness and light

With work hanging in the Louvre Museum in Paris, the Palace of Versailles and the Moscow Kremlin, Régis Mathieu has forged an enviable reputation as a world-leading designer and restorer of chandeliers, yet visit his open workshop in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of southeastern France and it’s not just the beauty of his grand interior decoration that takes your breath away. A vintage car buff since childhood, he bought his first Volkswagen Beetle not long after his seventeenth birthday. Fast-forward thirty years to the present, and Mathieu has amassed a personal collection of more than twenty rare Porsches, including a 904 Carrera GTS, a 718 RSK, a 914/6 and a 356 B 1600 GS Carrera GTL Abarth. As you’d expect, a selection of rare 911s inhabit his personal playground, but…

double victory for new taycan

This year's World Car of the Year Awards may have been held in unusual circumstances, but global lockdown didn't stop the all-electric Taycan seeing the chequered flag in two categories: World Luxury Car and the highly contested World Performance Car of the Year. Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board, Porsche Research and Development, received the awards. "This double win underlines what we wanted to achieve with the Taycan project," he said. "It was our aim to create a driver-focused, fully electric sports car capable of taking on any performance car in the world, regardless of its power source. At the same time, the design and engineering experts working on the Taycan project kept everyday usability and contemporary comfort, not to mention digital luxury for four passengers, a priority. Needless to…

top sim drivers join porsche esports contest

After two and a half months, the qualification process for the Porsche TAG Heuer Esports Supercup has come to an end. A strong line-up of forty sim racers from fourteen countries makes up the grid, which includes Formula Once ace, Max Verstappen. The 22-year-old is one of twenty drivers to secure a spot via the Porsche iRacing Cup qualification procedure. The other half of the grid consists of the top twenty competitors from the 2019 season. Last year’s champion, Joshua Rogers from Australia, is another of the 'ones to watch out for' when the new season of the digital racing series takes off on 2nd May at the virtual Circuit Zandvoort, located on the Dutch North Sea coast. For 2020, participating drivers will compete for a prize fund of $200,000. As…

le mans classic delayed until summer 2021

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Peter Auto and the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, organisers of the respected Le Mans Classic, have decided to postpone the tenth outing of the event, due to take place later this year. After having carefully studied different scenarios and which dates were available, it was finally decided postponing the event to 2021 was the best solution. The event will now take place between 1st and 4th July next year. “Le Mans Classic is an international event bringing together close to 200,000 spectators in one place. As you can imagine, keeping this event at the original dates in the current context is not an option. We have, in line with our partners and the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, decided to postpone so that everyone can take…

porsche museum opens virtual exhibition menu

The Porsche Museum in Stuttgart will remain closed until further notice to help contain the spread of the coronavirus. That said, a guide is available to download from the museum's website, providing special insight into an 'exhibition' currently without any visitors: former Porsche racing drivers will answer questions from followers on the Porsche Museum's Instagram page for the first time. Stéphane Ortelli, who drove to one of the total of nineteen overall Porsche victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, will kick off the question and answer sessions. Over the coming weeks, he will be followed by other works legends, including Hans-Joachim Stuck, Marc Lieb, Kurt Ahrens and Mark Webber, all taking questions from their own homes and providing sporting entertainment in these difficult times.
