Last week, I watched one of those home renovation shows with a dramatic before and after. A young couple somewhere in Texas had a total budget of US$200,000 to buy their new home. They bought a one-level house for $115,000 that needed a total reno. Enter the designer and contractor who magically gutted and renovated the entire house inside and out, complete with a fabulous eat-in custom kitchen, high-end appliances, new panelling, wainscotting, a mantel with a marble fireplace surround, sexy light fixtures and great furniture — fully decorated. Of course, for the big reveal, the house was propped right down to the perfect table settings and a fresh pie on the kitchen island. All of this for US$85,000, which meant they stayed within their total budget. Even if you assume…

PAULINE BOLDT Photographer, “Style Files: Shop” (page 23) The commercial photographer opened her Winnipeg creative studio, 26 Projects, in 2015, and she recently outfitted the space with handmade goods by her favourite designers. GILLIAN ATKINS Designer, “What Will It Cost?” (page 44) Five years ago, Gillian left the art world for an exciting career in design. She hasn’t looked back since the switch, and her husband and three sons have grown used to her ongoing renos. Investment piece worth every penny? Art you love — it’s an emotional investment, not a financial one. How do you maximize bathroom storage? Baskets — big and…

April’s “Style Files” claims that botanical artist Alfred John Wise was “one of the last to practise this craft before photography took over.” Clearly, the writer missed Art of the Plant at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa last summer. This brilliant exhibition featured the work of Canada’s top contemporary botanical artists, from coast to coast. — PAMELA STAGG, Royal Horticultural Society Gold Medallist in Botanical Art, Eastern Ontario As a follower of a vegan lifestyle for 20 years, I’m cognizant of animalsourced products and am saddened by the increase in these products in the pages of House & Home. A few years ago, I cancelled my subscription to another design magazine because of its renewed focus on fur products. I hope House & Home can evolve and not showcase these…

SHOP JUNE HOME SUPPLY Joël Cyr was working as a chef and his wife, Danielle, was at home raising their two children when the couple cooked up their first design webshop in 2014. Fast-forward five years, and they’ve expanded from clicks to bricks with the opening of June Home Supply in downtown Winnipeg. Attached to a coffee shop, the store’s modern minimalist interior was designed in collaboration with Renee Struthers of Studio Hiraeth and features a room-within-a-room layout that makes the space feel more like a well-edited home. Mediterranean-inspired stucco walls with geometric cutouts add architecture and interest. “We wanted it to feel like an experience,” says Danielle. The couple’s curated collection of home and lifestyle wares, sourced from small-scale producers, inspires customers to elevate everyday tasks with beautiful items such as beechwood…
