welcome!

It’s spring! Time for us all to get outside and up our vitamin D exposure. We love winter, but like all of you, we’re sure, we’re always pretty happy to see the back of it. Spring and summer are actually the perfect seasons to live a low-carb life: they’re all about braais, salads and outdoor living. The only downside to a braai can sometimes be trying to come up with new ideas for low-carb side dishes, which is why we’re particularly delighted with Vickie de Beer’s feature on page 60, dealing with exactly that. Her cauliflower potato salad is spectacular, as is her recipe for roasted Greek salad. We’re very happy to welcome Vickie to the team. Not only is she an award-winning food writer and stylist, she is also a mother…

Supplement with 9g of salmon oil on non-fish days• At least 200–400ml of red wine a day, 100–200ml at lunch and dinner. That’s up to more than half a bottle (we like this bit!)• At least 30ml (2 tablespoons) of olive oil a day,…

berry boost

Talk about dynamite in small packages! They may have a higher carb count (14g per 100g) than most other berries, but these little boosters make up for it with their remarkable health benefits. Blueberries have the highest level of antioxidants of all common fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants protect your body from free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can damage your cells and cause diseases such as cancer. Blueberries have also been found to have beneficial effects on insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism, and they contain substances that can prevent certain bacteria from binding to the wall of your bladder, which may help prevent urinary tract infections. Better yet, they don’t lose their antioxidant powers when juiced or cooked, and can easily be included in your diet. Eat blueberries as…
