Are you excited about Apple possibly launching an augmented reality headset? Tim Cook sure is. You probably already figured that, since Cook has offered his thoughts on AR on several occasions. And he’s doing it again, this time on China Daily, a state-run news outlet in China. In an interview, Cook says he “could not be more excited about the opportunities in the [AR] space. Well apparently, they also ran into an old friend while they were out there, and decided to bring it back into the operating system. Apple may be bringing a new Home app to iOS 16, but it’s not all good news: the tech giant has confirmed that the iPad will no longer be able to serve as a home hub when the update arrives this autumn. When setting up an Apple-based smart home, you can pick a central hub that will remain in the home at all times: this will receive commands, send out notifications, control automations and generally tell the other components what to do. In the past, the hub could be an Apple TV, a HomePod or an iPad, but as of the launch of iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 this autumn, only the HomePod and Apple TV will work. Apple faces yet another lawsuit over the notorious ‘Batterygate’ controversy, this time in the UK. The Guardian reports that consumer rights campaigner Justin Gutmann has filed a claim with the Competition Appeals Tribunal and is seeking damages of £768m. “I’m launching this case so that millions of iPhone users across the UK will receive redress for the harm suffered by Apple’s actions,” Gutmann said. “I hope dominant companies will re-evaluate their business models and refrain from this kind of conduct.” If the claim is successful, the compensation pool will be shared among owners of affected iPhones across the UK, a group believed to number 25 million.
