glamour? me?

When I started quilting over 20 years ago, I still had children at home and my decorating style was not glamorous by any means. I needed things that could stand the rough-and-tumble antics of the three teenage sons who were still at home. I didn’t decorate with velvet or silk. There were no ruffles or lace. Now, my children are all grown and I have grandchildren visiting regularly so my style is still not fancy. I am a fairly ordinary person. There is nothing elegant about my decorating style. But with all the pretty threads and metallic prints on cotton fabrics (meaning they are washable), I’ve started looking for more magic in my quilts. I think it’s time to try for a little exuberance, a little extravagance in my quilts.…

• your photos• ideas• stories Sue Penny and the Magic Needles Quilt Club of Montrose, Pennsylvania, adapted Blue Delft (McCall’s Quilting, March/April 2011), which was originally published as a wall hanging pattern, to make this bed-size version. They donated it to the local library for its annual Blueberry Festival, saying it’s a pleasure for them to share their passion for quilting with their community. Debby Schneider of Dallas, Georgia, liked Big Sky Country (McCall’s Quilting, May/June 2018) so much she made not just one but three versions of it. The first she made in patriotic colors in the original king size; for the other two, she reduced the block sizes by a third and added stars to make Quilt of Valor throws that she donated to the Milwaukee Homeless Veterans’ Initiative. • your questions• our answers Annette Falvo Technical Editor My quilt would be inspired by the iconic actor, philanthropist, and race car driver, Paul Newman. I would start with a color palette of “down to earth” colors. As a surprise element I would work in a bit of blue to give a nod to Mr. Newman’s famous eyes! I’d use a block that characterizes his “pay it forward” principles, such as a Friendship Star or a Snail’s Trail block. Finally, I’d contemplate a border that depicts a checkered race car flag (border bargello anyone?). Anissa Arnold Associate Editor As a young girl I dreamed of being a princess as so many little girls do. But I wasn’t into pink princesses, I wanted to be a take charge, kick-butt, intergalactic princess like Princess Leia. So needless to…

quilted gemology

Most of us who’ve seen Disney’s “Snow White” have been content to be wowed by the oversized diamonds, emeralds, and sapphires in the Seven Dwarfs’ mine, glinting and glimmering in all their Technicolor glory. For MJ Kinman, they were more than eye candy—they were artistic inspiration. “I’ve always loved gems,” MJ says when thinking back on the impact the movie had on her as a young girl. “They just glow and are saturated with color.” For the past 20 years, MJ has turned that passion into her life’s work with large, pieced quilts that depict close-up views of faceted gemstones ablaze with light. Actually, she started working on the problem of how to replicate a gemstone in fabric not long after she started quilting almost 30 years ago. A flyer from an…

Quilt Designed & Made by Laura Piland Skill Level Intermediate Finished Size 72" x 72" Finished Blocks 8 Block X 12" x 12" 4 Block Y 12" x 12" 12 Block Z 12" x 12" Planning Bright aqua squares float above a diagonal grid of pale multicolor squares, creating an intricate tile-like pattern against a dark background in this stylish, sophisticated throw quilt. The delicate piecing of the multicolor batik gives the design an opalescent shimmer, like shiny stone or marble. It’s possible to make this quilt less labor intensive, time consuming, and intricate by simplifying the pieced units. You could make the units as basic triangle-squares for a more straightforward, streamlined effect, with less piecing. If you go this route, don’t cut A’s and B’s from the pale multicolor batik, just cut 198 C’s from both pale multicolor…
