‘The next-level performance of the Ducati V4 caught Rutter unawares’ IT’S NICE TO KNOW I’m not getting soft in my old age. From his first spin on the Panigale V4 at Jurby, just to get familiar before some flat-out laps of the TT course later, Michael Rutter was in awe and more than a little in fear of the beast from Bologna. All we got out of him for five minutes were various bemused utterances centering around the word ‘fuck’. Even fresh from first practice on his BMW racers, the standard Speciale edition’s next-level performance caught him unawares. Professional that he is, he got on with the job of answering a big question that had been swirling around our brains since we first rode the bike: can Ducati finally make a return…

uk’s fastest special: challenge accepted

WE RECKON OUR Fireblade might be just about the best performance-focused special in the UK: but it’s an empty claim without measurement. So last month we extended an invite to other like-minded builders to come and measure up to it for the prestigious/highly-covetted/meaningless title of UK’s Fastest Special. Thankfully, we got responses. And good ones, too. We’ve stipulated that this is a call for road-legal bikes built to go fast, not for track bikes with a plate tacked on – in an ideal world that means full lights, etc, though we’ll make exceptions for anyone we believe genuinely uses their bike on the road without lights... Once such entrant is Robert Bean with his turbo Spondon GSX-R, seen in PB last year racing at Pendine Sands. His bike has covered thousands of…

tt 2018 in summary

MICHAEL DUNLOP and Dean Harrison got straight on lap record pace, MD becoming the fastest Lightweight competitor on his first practice outing on the Paton, and Harrison breezing past the previous Superbike lap record with a 133.4mph lap. Dan Kneen was tragically killed in Wednesday night’s practice, crashing just before Ramsey. Steve Mercer was also seriously injured when he was hit head-on by a course car attending Kneen’s crash. He remains in hospital. You can help his wife pay for the logistical costs of his care at www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/stevemercerofficial. Ryan Kneen later rode a tribute practice lap in memory of his brother. Harrison then set a new lap record on lap one of the Superbike race (134.432mph), and led until lap four, when his clutch failed, leaving MD to take the win, which…

‘it’s a 185bhp handful’

MY BIKE IS quite the attention seeker. I’ve spent a fair amount on it, but the previous owner had spent a bloody lot! The highlights so far include an Akrapovic can and de-cat link pipe, Pazzo levers, a Milwaukee replica wrap, Zero Gravity tinted race screen, headlight covers, a Talon rear sprocket, K&N filter, ECU flash, carbon swingarm, frame, intake and airbox covers. There’s more carbon-fibre, too: on the R&G tank slide covers, rear and side infills, top yoke cover, and both mudguards. There are also Renthal race grips and R&G mirror blanking plates. I think that’s everything... I have just ordered some Diamond Race Products rearsets, which will be fitted as soon as they arrive. I had the bike on the dyno after is was remapped, and it made 185bhp at the rear…

‘It still makes me smile’ 1998 HONDA FIREBLADE DANIEL DAVIS MY FIREBLADE IS dripping in lovely parts. The list of bit and bobs added to the 20-year-old bike includes Harris rearsets, PFM superbike brakes, Marchesini five-spoke wheels and an …hlins rear shock, plus steering damper and fork internals. The swingarm has been filled and braced, and it wears a full Akrapovic exhaust system. At its heart is a tuned motor with lightened and balanced crank, big-bore kit, head work and cams. It makes 135.6bhp – not a lot by today’s standards but it still puts a smile on my face when I ride it. ‘Plenty of battle scars’ SUZUKI GSX-R1000 K6 SIMON VALENTINE MY TRACK BIKE for the road has a daytime MoT, a stock engine with flashed ECU, and manual camchain adjuster. It makes 175bhp…
