Shop local! Since its inception in 1995, supporting and celebrating local quilt shop owners has been the driving force behind Quilt Sampler magazine. This issue reinforces that purpose. Our team scoured the nominations, selected 10 shops to feature, and then visited each shop. And as I discovered more about the owners and employees, I was reminded that they, in turn, enrich their communities through education, inspiration, and charitable efforts. And don’t forget about the projects! A magazine-exclusive project that represents each shop’s style follows the profile pages, and each shop offers a kit of fabrics for the project. So whether you’re shopping local by visiting in person or ordering the kits offered by the featured shops, I encourage you to strengthen your community and support independently owned quilt shops. PS: Look for this…

peddler’s way quilt co.

location: Washington, Illinois established: 2003 size: 6,000 square feet In the town of Washington, Illinois, about 10 miles east of Peoria, park benches, globe streetlights, and a misty water fountain give the downtown a nostalgic look. Beyond the corner Denhart Bank building, which anchors a row of shops, Peddler’s Way Quilt Co. continues the look with a vintage sign calling out the shop’s “quilt supplies” and “fabrics & novelties.” While visitors visit Washington for the small-town charm, many are wowed by the spacious shop created by owners Linda Calvert, Debbie Myers, and Gail Warning. They converted raw attic space into a usable second story to turn a one-story shop into a 6,000-square-foot pseudo barn that includes chair-lift access. A grand oak staircase, wood floors, and wood-beam ceilings add ambience to the lofty fabric home, where…

location: Morehead, Kentucky established: 2003 size: 1,500 square feet Whether customers come from their community of Morehead, Kentucky, situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, or make a two-hour drive from Cincinnati, the owners of Calico Patch Quilt Shop, Vicki and Tom McCarty, have one goal: to share their love of quilting. “Maybe they stopped in to buy something small,” Vicki says. “We want to take it a step further and inspire their creativity.” Housed in a red-and-white barn surrounded by a picket fence, Calico Patch is known for 1930s prints, reproduction fabrics, substantial wool offerings, and Vicki’s Calico Patch Designs. The warm wood tones of the cabinetry and a vintage sewing machine highlight fabrics from Marcus Fabrics and Moda Fabrics. The shop even has an indoor porch swing, where quilters can hand-piece…
