cinderella coldenhoff

The 2018 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations was supposed to be a showdown between MXGP World Champion Jeffrey Herlings and AMA 450 Pro Motocross Champion Eli Tomac, but the battle never materialized, as Team USA’s Tomac struggled throughout the day. Herlings didn’t have his best day, either, though he did win the first moto for the Netherlands. The second and third motos went to Herlings’ unheralded Dutch teammate Glenn Coldenhoff (6). In an upset of sorts, the KTM-mounted Coldenhoff, who has won exactly one MXGP moto in the last four years, flat-out took off in both of his Open motos, winning the first by 20 seconds and then topping Herlings by 5 seconds in the MXGP/Open final moto. It was the ride of a lifetime, earning the undermanned Dutch…

Yes, I bought two Altas, so consider me a true believer in the potential for electric bikes. I’d ridden the new enduro-styled 2019 Alta Redshift EXR I’d just bought from Lojaks Cycle Sales in Tarentum, Pennsylvania, over to Walmart for lunch when the news dropped that the San Francisco-based electric motorcycle company was ceasing operations and sending their employees home until new funding could be found. The report on asphaltandrubber.com explained that the partnership with Harley-Davidson that had been announced six months earlier had fallen through, and an attempt to purchase Alta by another entity had also fallen apart “at the 11th hour.” As of press time, one week after the news hit, Alta themselves had made no official announcement, with the exception of an @altamotors Instagram post that read “Our sincere…

michigan’s favorite sons

One would be hard-pressed to find two Michiganders as popular as the two men in this photo from the announcer’s tower at the Motocross of Nations. On the right is six-time AMA Supercross and AMA Pro Motocross Champion Jeff Stanton, who hails from nearby Sherwood. The other is U.S. Congressman Fred Upton, who hails from St. Joseph and has served Michigan’s 6th Congressional District in the House of Representatives since 1987. Upton came out to watch the MXoN and root for Team USA. Too bad Congressman Upton didn’t bring his niece along—Kate Upton is the world-famous Victoria’s Secret model and Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue covergirl.…

canine x illustrated

In its third annual running, the Mowgli Memorial GNCC Dog Show took place this past September at the Mason-Dixon GNCC, and Racer X was on hand to judge the competition. Being the renowned canine racing publication that we are, we were the perfect fit for the job, as Andrew Fredrickson, Dustin Williamson, and Derek Garcia formed the hard-nosed judges’ panel. The GNCC track crew set up a course with track markers, starting gates, turns, a tunnel, and a hillclimb that really put the pups to the test while we judged on time, appearance, agility, and showmanship. Our winning dog, coming out of the Pro Class (the registered pedigree division), was a two-year-old poodle named Harper from Pittsburgh. She really impressed us with her speed, and she put on a very…

What happened to the track at RedBud? It was turned into a sand track, and it doesn’t take much thought to figure out why—to benefit the Europeans. They (Youthstream and the FIM) can claim it was for “rider safety,” as was stated by an announcer, but I cry BS! Sand wasn’t hauled in for the race when it was held in Unadilla in 1987. Why now? Everyone talked about our racers having the home field advantage. Well, how can you have that when you are not allowed to race the track as-is? That was a joke, especially given that Barcia and Plessinger proved themselves to be mudders this year, and Eli Tomac is no slouch. Since the FIM and now Youthstream has changed the format nearly every year since our years of…
