letter from the editor

I thought about placing a disclaimer sticker on this month’s magazine, as it comes with a free reprint of the 1997 February/March edition of Scootering. The disclaimer would read: “1997 prices no longer applicable”. You might be thinking, yeah… we know! But I was surprised by how many phone calls we got from traders and advertisers last time we did a free reprint. They had genuinely been inundated with readers trying to buy a TS1 kit for £235, or a Malossi 166 kit for £99.50 and so on. You couldn’t make it up. crit-ical but not yet armageddon!

Readers of the motoring press and popular media could be forgiven for thinking that the recent extension of Paris’ Clean Air Zone (Crit’Air) to foreign registered vehicles had started some sort of motoring apocalypse. While it’s true that life’s become much more complicated for hauliers and coach operators visiting the city, for the majority of British scooterists venturing overseas there’s little impact – for now. Clean air zone legislation was introduced in Paris on July 1, 2016 and from April 1, 2017, those laws will apply to foreign registered vehicles. In brief, any vehicle entering the Crit’Air zones in Paris, Grenoble or Lyon between the hours of 8am and 8pm must obtain and display a vignette (sticker) entering without one attracts a fine of €70. This figure’s important as in French…

new look and products at chiselspeed

Chiselspeed has updated its branding for 2017. As proprietor Martin Cook explained to Scootering: “The old logo has served us well but we thought it was time for a change. Maca designed the original artwork and I’m pleased to say that he’s the man responsible for our new look.” Also fresh in stock at Chiselspeed are a range of Ancillotti style seats available in black ‘weave’ finish (£124.95) or metalflake effect (£175). Red and blue metalflake seats are currently available off the shelf but other colours are available – contact the shop for details. The latest incarnation of the shop’s M-tech programmable ignition units is now available to suit the Piaggio/Gilera 125 auto engines-popular as auto transplants into Lambretta frames. Priced at £126 the ‘M-tech P’ is supplied with general ‘plug…
