FOURTEEN months after advocate Dali Mpofu uttered the words “shut up” before the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into allegations, he is facing a disciplinary hearing before the committee of the Legal Practice Council (LPC) into his conduct before the Zondo Commission. But Mpofu is confident that the hearing is going well and that he may perhaps not face any consequences. The disciplinary hearing kicked off yesterday and is expected to last until today. The charge against Mpofu has its origin when he in March last year, while cross-examining Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan on behalf of former SA Revenue Service commissioner Tom Moyane, told Gordhan’s legal representative, advocate Michelle le Roux, to “shut up while I’m talking”. MPUMALANGA Premier Refilwe Mtsweni says he is shocked to learn that the alleged mastermind behind the muti murder of six-year-old Bontle Mashiyane is a woman. On Monday, three suspects – ex-convict Collen Hlongwane, 36, Ntombikayise Ngwenya, 40, and Thapelo Ngomane, 25 – appeared in the KaBokweni Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga on charges of rape, murder, kidnapping and dealing in human tissue. Mashiyane was reported missing on April 3; her body was discovered on May 21 at Mganduzweni, near White River. Mashiyane went missing the same weekend as Hillary Gardee, the daughter of former EFF secretary-general, Godrich Gardee. Civil society organisations and political parties have raised the alarm over attempts by the State Security Agency (SSA) to silence Independent Media and undermine media freedom through its court action, which will be heard in a closed session at the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria today. The outcry denouncing the SSA came after the agency dragged Independent Media, The Star’s sister paper Daily News and its journalist Thabo Makwakwa to court for publishing a story around a leaked intelligence report whose contents cannot be made public as there is an ex parte interdict in place.
