The Syracuse Nationals celebrates its 20th anniversary this July. In two decades the show has grown to become the largest special-interest auto event in the northeast and one of the largest in the United States. More than 8,000 ’85-and-earlier vehicles and almost 100,000 spectators cover the huge New York State Fairgrounds. The Syracuse Nationals Week Road Tour will be there all week to join in the celebration. The story of the beginning of the Syracuse Nationals is both interesting and unique. Way back in 1995 the National Street Rod Association held their annual Nationals event in Syracuse, New York, for the first and only time. The NSRA soon moved their Nationals to its permanent home in Louisville. Many of the folks who attended that event in 1995 were northeastern hot rodders…

for starters

There was a lull within the early car segment of our hobby over the past decade. It was as if the early car (let’s say those cars prior to 1948) didn’t seem to be all that much in demand. But I believe we are basking in the sunlight now.For starters, one only has to look at the upward tick in participant attendance at the regional and national events within our hobby to see there is more enthusiasm brewing and it’s beginning to show … a good thing. Next up take a look at the indoor car shows and see what types of cars are vying for the topflight awards … Grand National Roadster Show and its America’s Most Beautiful Roadster award, the Detroit Autorama and its Don Ridler Memorial award,…

3 penny roadster

In an extremely organized build that consumed 20,000 manhours, the simplest task to complete for the ’36 Ford roadster that won the America’s Most Beautiful Roadster award at the 2019 Grand National Roadster Show was to christen the car with a name. And that didn’t happen until after the car went into color some years after the project had begun. It took eight years for Eric Peratt’s Pinkee’s Rod Shop of Windsor, Colorado, to complete George Poteet’s AMBR-winning ’36 Ford roadster, and that was after starting the build with a decent example. It was on the occasion George and his sister visited Pinkee’s to see the ’36 in color for the first time that George asked Peratt what the name of the color was. Peratt replied “Chocolate Milk” and George recollected…
