The Big Issue 15-06-20

The Big Issue is one of Britain’s leading news and cultural magazines. Every week’s edition is packed full of original takes on the biggest issues of the day as well as interviews with the most significant figures in politics and entertainment. The Big Issue was founded 1991 to give people experiencing homelessness the opportunity to earn their own income. We continue to support hundreds of vendors across the UK and all proceeds from sales go to help anyone wanting to lift themselves out of poverty.

EXHIBITION Take a virtual walk Among the Trees With galleries and museums still closed, and with many of our most vulnerable still unable to travel far, a virtual exhibition uniting art and nature is timely. Cut short by Covid, The Hayward Gallery’s Among the Trees exhibition – a thought-provoking look at our relationship with forests – has moved online. Watch a video tour with director Ralph Rugoff, hear interviews with artists, and listen to specially created podcasts and playlists. southbankcentre.co.uk/whats-on/exhibitions/ haywardgallery-art/among-the-trees BOOKS Support Independent Bookshop Week With many of them at risk even before lockdown, independent bookshops face massive challenges as they reopen in a new age of social distancing and increased hygiene awareness – the days of leisurely casual browsing are all but gone for now. Which makes events like Independent Bookshop Week all the…

WEEK 12 WALL SITS They’re the muscles in the front of your thighs that you use every day for basic but important things like getting out of a chair and walking down stairs – time to set yourself some quad goals. Strengthen your quadriceps along with your glutes and calves with this simple but effective exercise. 1. Back flat to a wall, hips and knees at a right angle, feet shoulder width apart with your heels to the ground. 2. Squeeze your abdominal muscles and slowly slide your back down the wall until your thighs are parallel to the ground. Now hold the position for 30 seconds, or as long as you can manage. 3. Slide slowly back up the wall to a standing position. Rest and repeat three times, with a goal of increasing…

the big issue manifesto

A hand up... Proceeds from sales of this magazine are being used to tide over our vendors until they can get back to work on their pitches. Not a handout… In ordinary circumstances our vendors buy magazines for half the cover price and sell at full price, keeping the difference. They earn a legitimate income, and gain valuable social and employability skills. With your support now, we will continue to do so once the crisis has passed. The right to citizenship… The Big Issue Foundation, our charitable arm, helps sellers tackle social and financial exclusion. Prevention… Big Issue Invest offers backing and investments to social enterprises, charities and businesses which deliver social value to communities.…

When I saw the bright yellow Joe Wicks cover of The Big Issue [April 16-22] at my local Co-op, it was like seeing an old friend. I had wondered what would happen to your vendors as everything has been so chaotic and uncertain in recent months. I took out a subscription for three months (initially) until I can buy it in the usual way. My local vendor stands outside Sainsbury’s in Dundee, he is a very humble man, always smiling. We always greet each other and he is such a kind person. I always find reading your magazine a very positive experience. It has strong themes around all of the important issues such as social justice and tackling inequalities, yet it always leaves me feeling stronger, because I am reminded that…

a loud, proud monument to lockdown

In Kielce, a small Polish city about 80 miles north-east of Krakow, there is a statue of Miles Davis. Life-size, in dark glasses and long coat, it captures the genius lost in the moment. It is, naturally, very cool. And a bit surprising. There is also one in his hometown of Alton, Illinois. Plans were revealed a couple of weeks ago to erect a statue to Little Richard in Macon, where he grew up. I hope, like the Georgia Peach, that thing will be wild! There is a statue of Andrei Tarkovsky outside the All-Russian Institute of Cinematography in Moscow. Oddly, the monument looks more like the Dutch master Johan Cruyff than the Russian filmmaker. Which takes us down a wormhole of contemporary stars, particularly footballers, not rendered in their best light.…
