WEEK 13 COUCH DIPS Imagine there was a really effective exercise you could do without even having to leave the couch? Imagine no more, as your sofa becomes the secret to strengthening your triceps – that’s the muscles along the back of your upper arms that help you extend your elbows and straighten your arms. The same ones you use to reach for the remote control. 1. Sit on the edge of the couch, legs stretched out in front of you. Lift your toes so you’re balancing on your heels. Now position your hands either side of you and lift your whole body. 2. Lower your whole body until your backside hits the floor, then rise back to full arm extension. Don’t sit down yet, you’re not done… 3. Try to do as many dips…

@bigissue @missmoz77 My heart goes out to James. I lost 2 cats last year (18 & 16), they gave me joy & comfort during some really difficult times. James & Bob were 2 halves of the same coin, destined to be together & change each other’s lives. Sincere condolences. Stay strong James. #ripbob @The_Animal_Team Everyone here sends a very sad but fond farewell to this amazing character. Angels do exist on earth and Bob was one of the best! @HallMeadEnglish I know a lot of our KS3 students have loved reading @StreetCatBob so this is very sad news. However, what a life he’s had! We’ll miss you Bob! @djalicat I used to see Bob and James in Angel when I worked there. Rest in peace you amazing cat! @noripurrs Deepest condolences. I was a foreign student back in the days, and…

bob wasn’t just a cat. he was a symbol of second chances

Last week, Street Cat Bob died. The reaction from readers has been unprecedented. We have been inundated with messages of condolence, details about times of meetings and requests to pass thoughts on to James Bowen. James was Bob’s owner. But that is too reductive an explanation of that relationship. As so many of our readers know, James was homeless and struggling with addiction when Bob, a stray cat, came into his life. That was in 2007 and they were inseparable from then until the end. Bob was James’ companion as he busked and then, working his way back, began to sell The Big Issue. Soon, their incredible bond gave James a new focus and eventually a book deal. The bestseller, in 2012, became a series of bestsellers. Then came the movie. Bob,…

books by camel!

While we wait for libraries to reopen in July across the UK, other countries have taken enterprising steps to boost literacy and give kids that all-important access to books. In Ethiopia the books go out via land or, more specifically, camel. More than 26 million children are out of school during their Covid-19 lockdown so Save The Children’s camel library is bringing the life-nurturing power of books to 22,000 children in 33 villages. First started in 2010, the fleet of 21 camels transport up to 200 books at a time to kids like 13-year-old Mahadiya, who says that children have been exposed to exploitation and labour since schools shut. And in the US state of Virginia, the books travel via air. Montgomery County public schools became the first in the world to use…
