welcome to total film

Mr. Bond, we’ve been expecting you… for quite some time. Back in March we hoped to rendezvous with 007 for Daniel Craig’s final outing in the tux, but something even more dastardly than a Bond villain got in the way. So here we are again, tussling with our favourite gentleman spy as No Time To Die gets set to release (Who knows, though? He may be creeping back into the shadows of the schedules as we speak). To celebrate this 25th Bond movie, we got together with Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson to share their memories of all those licensed to kill as well as getting the inside story on the latest instalment. Plus, we looked again at the game changer that was GoldenEye, dug back into our archives…

call sheet

JORDAN FARLEY NEWS EDITOR Last December I interviewed Cary Joji Fukunaga in a New York hotel. Last month I talked to Cary over Zoom with my laptop perched on a toilet (the quietest room in the house). MATTHEW LEYLAND REVIEWS EDITOR Zoom-ed with auteur Thomas Vinterberg then realised my toilet plunger was in the background the whole time. My background, not his – that would be really weird. JANE CROWTHER EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Armie Hammer is such a nice guy that he did a personalised greeting in the style of his Cars 3 character Jackson Storm for a young family member who’s a fan.…

total film wingman

DEAR WINGMAN I try to slip obscure movie quotes into everyday parlance. Such as when stressing the need for attention to detail, I will say, “We need to to cross the ‘t’s and dot the lower-case ‘j’s,” in the hope only a select few will get the reference. I was just wondering if anyone else tries to slip obscure movie quotes into everyday parlance, not in the hope they will be spotted, but in the hope they won’t? PAUL LOGUE, DURHAM WINGMAN SAYS… TBH, Paul, there isn’t much that Wingman does that he hopes won’t get spotted. So definitely with you on the wilfully obscure quotes. One fail-safe way to preserve obscurity is to quip “Yes, Obi-Wan”: let them all think you’re citing Star Wars, when actually it’s Cocktail. Suckers! OK, ruined that one…

I’m now 28, with a first-class degree in acting and a few movies/shows under my belt. It hasn’t all been sunshine and roses to get me this far. I have battled severe depression and recently developed a very painful physical disability. I tell you all this not for pity but because I want you to understand what I mean when I say ‘thank you’. Thank you for giving me…

EXCLUSIVE SPIRITED AWAY SOUL | Pixar’s latest concerns itself with life, death, purpose and all that jazz… Conduct a survey to find the finest Pixar movie of the last decade, and chances are that Inside Out - a look at the competing emotions of a little girl – will come out on top. Well, it’d better do, or Anger, Disgust and Sadness will have something to say about it. So it is with great Joy that Teasers notes that Pixar’s 23rd feature, Soul, appears to be something of a companion piece. “Uh, maybe thematically, but it’s pretty different design-wise,” says Pete Docter, who directed 2015’s Inside Out and now co-directs Soul with Kemp Powers, who is making his directorial debut after impressing with his scripts for five episodes of Star Trek: Discovery and the…

jonathan majors

As an actor, Jonathan Majors doesn’t take his choices lightly. “In the ’hood we say you check the paperwork,” he told Variety of his determination to look deeply into what he signs up to. “Make sure the paperwork’s straight, and I expect you to check my paperwork, too.” Happily, the MCU’s paperwork appears to hold firm. Majors is sizing up a major role in Ant-Man 3, rumoured to be multi-faceted, trans-temporal trouble-causer Kang The Conqueror. And if Majors’ total immersion in his diverse roles is any indication, the MCU just hit gold. A Yale School Of Drama graduate, Majors has conquered all-comers lately. He aced Korean War veteran Atticus Freeman in TV’s Lovecraft Country, mixing fantasy and history with complicated family dynamics in a fashion that may help ready him for Marvel…
