a bright spark

FINALLY after months of seemingly endless miles in the dark, the long, bright days are upon us. Thermals have been replaced with lightweight T-shirts and all-singing, all-dancing heavyweight rain jackets have been washed, waterproofed and put away for a few months. And better still, you can finally see where you’re going. Fellow trail runners, this is what enduring the winter was all about – it’s time to make the most of those fantastic sunlit evenings. And as it turns out, light – in all its guises, be that the sun or the weight of your shoes – has a huge impact on the way we run, as explains Professor John Brewer in his feature on page 32. In fact, John’s take on the whole subject was so enlightening (ahem!) we decided…

THE INNS CROWD Winter may be all about skiing in Innsbruck but in spring and summer trail running becomes the most important alpine activity in the area. Kicking off the season, the Innsbruck Alpine TrailRun Festival took place in April, and was the first of many superb events to be held over the summer. If you have a great pic send it to tr@bauermedia.co.uk TIME TO SHINE Finally, it’s here! Summer is upon us. Those long dark nights of pondering how much layering you should employ before every run – not to mention what jacket to wear – are behind us. It’s now the season to start really enjoying…

boost your endurance this summer

MUSIC AIDS ENDURANCE... Many of us shun headphones when running, particularly on trails, as it seems at odds with the nature-embracing mindset. But, new research, presented at the American College of Cardiology, has confirmed listening to upbeat music can increase endurance. It’s thanks to feel-good chemicals released in the brain, which can stave off fatigue and pain. ...AND REDUCES PAIN The exercise-tunes combo seems to be on the money this month. According to researchers in Germany, listening to music that’s in time with your movements – dubbed ‘Jymmin’ – can increase the pain threshold. So, finding some music with a bpm that matches your cadence and speed could keep you on it when the going gets tough. BERRY GOOD NEWS Research on endurance athletes who took New Zealand Blackcurrant saw significant effects on cardiovascular and…

under the microscope: swimrun

What? An increasingly popular endurance sport which mixes open water swimming with trail running. How? All you need is a wetsuit and some hand paddles. Competitors run in twos for safety, and must carry all their own gear. Why? Swimrunning’s fusion of the two disciplines taxes a variety of energy systems and near enough every muscle in the body, making it a complete test of fitness. By using hand paddles and a leg float when swimming, the effort is isolated into your upper body, allowing your legs to rest before the next running section. If you’re looking for a new challenge over the warmer months, swimrunning is definitely one to consider.…

v protein porridge pots

On the face of it, these pots have got it all. Take GoProtein’s High Protein Porridge – it packs in 25g of protein, along with a mix of fruits to provide micronutrients, on top of the obvious influx of carbs. The downside? A profile of flavourings and sugar to make you wince. VERDICT Porridge pots are fab for convenience, but as with all processed food, it comes packed with sugar. Plain oats are loaded with protein as well as healthy carbohydrates. Oats win!…
