“The magic of a house is that it reflects the person who inhabits it,” says Emmanuel de Bayser, whose Berlin apartment (page 152) is the backdrop to an enviable collection of modernist furniture and art. His spare, deftly styled living room feels contemporary — almost futuristic — yet the Jean Royère armchairs and sofas are from the 1950s and the Serie Noir lamps were designed by Serge Mouille six decades ago, as were the Charlotte Perriand shelving and stools. Only the abstract art is new. It’s not sufficient to resort to the cliché that “everything old is new again”.
