All of Eastern Europe watches the developments with a wary eye as war rages in neighboring Ukraine. Despite the uncertainties regarding Russian aggression against Ukraine the Organizing Committee of the XVI International Numismatic Congress recently made it clear the September 11-16 event will take place in Warsaw, Poland, as was originally scheduled. Could reggae musician Bob Marley appear on a Jamaican coin or bank note? While according to the Bank of Jamaica it isn’t possible Jamaicans on social media don’t agree. Jamaica is preparing for a new set of bank notes while considering changes to Jamaica’s circulating coins. The $2,000 bank note denomination is new and is being added as a convenience while continuing to suggest inflationary pressures to use higher denomination notes more often in circulation. Inflation in the island nation was at 5.21 percent in 2020, 5.61 percent during 2021, and so far at 6.25 percent during 2022. Coin hoarding might be illegal? Where would you draw the legal line between hoarding and having a large coin collection? These are on the table as the Philippines considers legislation that would tighter laws against currency counterfeiting and the unnecessary accumulation or hoarding of coins. Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Benjamin E. Diokno said, “These proposed measures are expected to further strengthen BSP’s currency operations covering production, distribution, deposit-taking from banks, authenticity verification, anti-counterfeiting operations, and retirement.” The governor continued, “The proposal entails amendments to existing laws and will take into consideration the current economic landscape, as well as advancements in printing technologies,” adding, “The BSP continues to work with stakeholders towards protecting the public against the unlawful or improper use of Philippine currency.” Philippine Senator Grace Poe added, “Reminders by the Bangko…

The Jan. 12 Forbes magazine headline “Crypto vs. China’s Digital Currency: Never The Twain Shall Meet” appears to say it all regarding China’s attitude towards a currency system The Peoples’ Republic can’t monitor. China is more interested in its government owned and controlled e-yuan. The e-yuan has been recently highlighted in the Alibaba owned newspaper South China Morning Post. According to the Feb. 4 issue, Zhongguancun Bank in Beijing and NewUp Bank in Liaoning each gained permission from China’s central bank to suspend all cash services. Despite these news flashes it does not appear China is in any hurry, if ever at all, to drop its coins and bank notes in favor of some form of electronic cash system. It’s always exciting when a hoard of coins is found, but it is even more exciting when a coin is discovered, even if it may be a single coin find, that is truly rare. That’s what recently happened in Hungary when a single Roman gold coin was unearthed, the coin being struck in the name of the short reigning Emperor Volusian. Not only are coins of this emperor rare, but this is a gold coin, a denomination that is even less seldom encountered from this time. Inflation in the Roman Empire was out of control throughout the third century. (Volusian ruled between 251 and 253.)
