The itch to get back on the water has become almost unbearable. Whether you are a boat owner, regular crew or occasional charterer, this has been an unexpectedly long lay up ashore. As the COVID-19 lockdown kicked in, the typically perverse British weather dished up one of the sunniest springs of recent years, testing the resolve of the public at large, and sea-going sailors in particular. But while the national newspapers shared images of deserted city streets and impossibly empty motorways, the Solent, normally heaving on a sunny bank holiday, was the most eerily quiet of all. sailors urged to be ‘conservative’ as limited sailing resumes

In Wales, only those with direct access to their boats, within a five miles radius of home were able to go sailing. At the time YM went to press (1 June), skippers could not stay onboard overnight unless it was their permanent residence. In Northern Ireland, day sails were limited to four hours, and the Belfast Coastguard had to be informed of all vessel movements. yachtsman rescued after dismasting

The solo skipper of the Vancouver 34 Pilot, Helena has been rescued after the yacht dismasted in the Atlantic. Billy Brannan was returning to the UK from Marigot Bay, St Martin when he issued an EPIRB alert on 22 May around 513 miles SW of Lizard Point. ‘I was running downwind under staysail, averaging 7-7.5 knots, with winds around 46-54 knots for over 30 hours with no problems, then bang! At 2300 on 20 May the yacht capsized and rolled,’ said the uninjured skipper. Brannan cleared the wreckage and ‘got underway with engine and autopilot’, intending to continue. The oil tanker, Seaways Reymar diverted to assist, arriving on 23 May. 1,495,000 William Fife’s classic Moonbeam of Fife III is for sale for €1,495,000. The 30m (98.4ft) yacht was built in 1903 and was hull number 491 to leave the Scottish yard. 1M £1 million is to be spent by Somerset West and Taunton Council on emergency repairs to the northern wall of Watchet Harbour after it partially collapsed in December 2019, and suffered storm damage in February 2020. Is your PLB and EPIRB registration up to date? Sailors are reminded to ensure their registration details for PLBs and/or EPIRBs are current after an activated EPIRB led to a six-and-a-half hour search by HM Coastguard, the RNLI and police around Teignmouth on 4 May. calls for collaboration to tackle old boats

The burden of disposing of old boats should not fall solely on owners, says the global trade association, the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA). It has recently released its policy statement on end-of-life vessels and responsible boat ownership where it stressed that the issue was ‘not purely an owner problem’. It would like to see increased cooperation with industries which use composite materials, like wind turbine manufacturers, and their representative bodies, such as the European Composite Industry Association, to ‘maximise the volume potential’ for reusing materials from old boats. The problem of what to do with redundant glass reinforced plastic (GRP) composite material has long hampered the boat industry’s progress on tackling end-of-life boats. new qualifier for the vendée globe

A new qualifier for the Vendée Globe is to begin on 4 July 2020. The Vendée-Arctique-Les Sables d’Olonne solo race has been organised by the IMOCA Class, and will see skippers race 3,600 miles from Les Sables d’Olonne, France to the west of Iceland and north of The Azores before returning to the start port. Due to coronavirus restrictions, there will be no race village at Les Sables d’Olonne and entrants will go directly to the start line from their home ports.…
