Wine regions around the world offer beautiful scenery, exceptional wine estates, great dining and luxurious places to stay. But no place reaches the heights of Napa Valley. This small wine region in Northern Cali-fornia was a sleepy backwater as recently as the 1960s. Since then, it has emerged as the quintessential wine country destination. In fact, venerable regions such as Bordeaux and Tuscany have based their approach to burgeoning tourism on the Napa model. Napa had the foresight to protect its rural landscape through the 1968 Agricultural Preserve, ensuring that the valley wasn’t overrun by residential or industrial development.
