SELECTING COLORS AT ROOM TEMPERATURE Grounded in whites and neutrals, farmhouse decor typically favors no-fuss palettes with muted hues. But that doesn’t mean the style is void of color. In fact, a fresh, modern interpretation of farmhouse style leaves plenty of possibilities for thoughtful, well-edited color. Start by determining if floors, countertops, tiles, and other permanent finishes are warm (cream, yellow, red undertones) or cool (gray, blue, green undertones). It’s natural to let that color temperature drive your overall scheme. If your personal preference contradicts that direction, though, never fear! Go ahead and listen to your heart. I found it just in time!”Bre Bertolini COMFORT STATION Bre Bertolini’s master bath was a 1980s time capsule. Bre (on IG @brepurposed) brought it into the 21st century with a midcentury dresser as a vanity, opposite right, white tile on the floor and walls, and DIY storage. “Although the bathroom is quite spacious, there isn’t a ton of storage,” she says. Bre built the ladder shelf, below, and the L-shape bench, opposite left, using ¾-inch plywood and pine 1×4s for the ladder uprights. PATTERNED TILE Turn a blah bathroom into a playful-yet-polished space with geometric floor tile. If you’re up for it, install new tile. An alternative is to upgrade current tile floors with a DIY stencil. First, scrub floors with a grease-cutting cleaner and mask off baseboards with painters tape. Prime tile using a bonding primer, then coat floors with a flat-sheen base color. Spray the back of your stencil with a low-tack adhesive and let it dry—this will help keep the stencil in place as you center it on each tile and apply paint with a foam roller or stencil brush.
