new zealand’s fastnet

A circumnavigation of our North Island offers any sailor a privileged view of its raw, enormously diverse coast, but those participating in this year’s SSANZ Round North Island race will have little time to admire the views. They’ll be focused on coaxing every ounce of speed from their vessels. It’s an iconic but formidable race for the double-hander crews – 1300nm over four legs – and the weather it dishes up is notoriously unpredictable – particularly as it takes around two weeks to complete. Reading through this year’s fleet of 38 entries, I was struck by the range in the size of the vessels (28 to 52 feet). A 52-footer in lively conditions is a handful for a duo but spare a thought for the chaps on the 28-footer, being tossed about…

boat world

“The Catalyst fits our profile perfectly – building high-spec, high-performance tenders for superyachts.” GROWING STRONGER AUCKLAND’S LLOYD STEVENSON BOATBUILDERS (LSB) IS IN EXPANSION MODE AND IS HAVING TO GET CREATIVE TO MAXIMISE FACTORY FLOOR SPACE FOR THE GROWING WORKLOAD. While the need for more space is not a new issue, says LSB People & Marketing Manager Luke Hill, it’s become more pressing with the recent acquisition of the moulds for the Catalyst 45 catamaran – a vessel previously built by Salthouse Boatbuilders. “Greg (Salthouse) approached us late last year to ask if we were interested in the moulds – as he was downsizing his operation and closing his yard.” The 14m Catalyst was designed by Morrelli & Melvin as a high-speed tender/chase-boat for Emirates Team NZ. The design proved popular and Salthouse subsequently built…

grand designs

A household name among Australia’s A boating fraternity, building a strong export market has always been one of Riviera’s goals, but especially under current owner Rodney Longhurst’s watch. In recent years the company has released a steady stream of new models, boosting exports to the USA, Europe, the Middle East, Asia-Pacific and New Zealand. The new 505 SUV is the latest model to leave Riviera’s Coomera facility. It is destined to be a star player, here in New Zealand where Riviera enjoys a healthy market share, and in markets around the world. Although relatively small in terms of numbers of boats sold, New Zealand remains an important market for Riviera, with high per capita sales and a loyal Riviera customer base. Boating NZ caught up with hull number one at Runaway Bay…

make way for the king

In the 5m range, a RIB is a lightweight, easy-to-tow I proposition for the family or bach owner who wants a sea-kindly nature, superb stability and ability to perform multiple functions. At this size they have a Swiss army knife, one-boat-does-it-all appeal that is beginning to be noticed by local manufacturers. King Watercraft has been manufacturing quality RIBS for over seven years. While the smaller jet ribs have been at the forefront in recent times, the Canterbury-based company is now applying some of its design and styling to the growing outboard RIB market. The latest of these is the custom 5.5m and fills the niche of a light, nimble, versatile boat with room for everyone. King Craft’s design pedigree has enhacned this unique reinterpretation of the family RIB. This compact King RIB…

bon voyage cruising the french mediterranean coast

Travelling the Mediterranean, or the Middle Sea as the early Arabic traders named this nearly land-locked waterway, is a voyage through the very beginnings of western civilisation, a fact among the many others that induced me to live on its shores for nearly eight years and return regularly since then. Its weather changes can be severe due to famous winds that include the north/northwesterly Mistral and Tramontana, the westerly Poiniente, the easterly Levante and the southerly desert blasts of the Sirocco – to name only a few. These systems can generate short, steep seas when angry winter time gales blow but, in the summer when thousands of yachts arrive from Europe and beyond they are generally serene, as they were during September when I double-handed a new catamaran along the length of…
