bold bmw x7 has range rover in its sights @LobAllan AFTER a healthy supply of spy shots, BMW has provided the clearest glimpse yet of its Range Rover rival by unveiling its Concept X7 iPerformance at this week’s Frankfurt Motor Show. It’s set to morph into a production car in 2018 as the brand looks to expand its influence in the SUV and luxury sectors. Described as a “new model concept for the luxury segment”, the flagship SUV moves the German company’s large car design on from the current 7 Series – with which the production X7 will share its platform. The concept introduces a more exaggerated version of BMW’s trademark kidney grille, pinched LED ‘laser’ headlamps and a horizontal chrome-lined lower air intake. The shape of that intake is mirrored on the rear bumpers, while a singlepiece light bar stretches…

buyer’s guide: peugeot rcz

Thanks to SJ Rayner Cars in Kidderminster, Worcs, for the loan of the RCZ in our pictures Contact 01562 820131 NEED TO KNOW The engine mounts can fail prematurely, leading to knocking noises when braking or accelerating. NEED TO KNOW The exhaust heat shield can loosen, causing rattles and whining. Tightening things up is fairly easy, though. NEED TO KNOW Leather on the dashboard can sag, especially around the air vents. And effective fixes are expensive. OUR VIEW THE RCZ didn’t feature in our Driver Power 2017 satisfaction survey, but it was in last year’s. Owners rated performance and handling (13th and 15th), but criticised the car’s ride quality and practicality. YOUR VIEW KEVIN Carmichael from Guildford, Surrey, loves his RCZ 1.6 THP 156. He told us: “I got it when it was two years old and it was great value.…

is a 1,000bhp hypercar really relevant these days?

THE undoubted star of this week’s Frankfurt Motor Show is – as you might expect – a car so bold and so brazen that it deserved its place in history even before the covers came off. Mercedes-AMG’s Project One hypercar (above) may not be a beauty, but you can’t argue with the depth of engineering that has gone into what Mercedes describes as “the first Formula One car with MoT approval”. And, you’ll be pleased to hear, much of that incredible work was done by Mercedes-AMG’s talented workforce here in the UK. You can read the full story and marvel over the Project One’s stats on Page 12, but you have to wonder whether there’s still a place for a road car with this level of performance in 2017? The biggest issue is…

£12,000 to spend on a large, refined saloon Dear Lawrence, I’m looking for a comfy large saloon for my long commute, but I want value, so don’t care about premium brands. What will £12,000 buy me? Simon MacDougal, Nairn, Highland Contact: THE RELIABLE CHOICE Kia Optima FOR: Smart styling, lots of kit, long warranty AGAINST: Unexciting to drive, one engine OFTEN overlooked in favour of more desirable models, the Kia Optima is a quietly competent used buy. It looks smarter than you might expect, while the cabin is solid and is packed full of equipment. It’s spacious, refined and comfortable on the motorway, but isn’t as much fun in bends as the Volkswagen Passat or Mazda 6. The sole diesel engine isn’t that powerful, either. A 2014 Optima 3 with 29,000 miles was in the classifieds for…

MODEL TESTED: Dacia Logan MCV Stepway 1.5 dCi SE Summit PRICE: £13,895 ENGINE: 1.5-litre 4cyl, 89bhp IN SE Summit trim as tested here, our Dacia Logan MCV Stepway is the most expensive model in the range. It’s still the cheapest car on our test by far, though, starting at £13,895. DESIGN & ENGINEERING score 3.3 JUST like the Skoda, the Dacia Logan MCV has recently been facelifted, with a new grille and headlamps, plus LED running lights for the first time. Our Stepway version gets a jacked-up look with some extra plastic body cladding, roof rails and silver skid plates. It’s not as stylish as the Tipo or Rapid Spaceback, but it does have its own rugged charm and wouldn’t look out of place on a farm or even a country estate. The Logan MCV…

Mazda MX-5 RF STORMY weather during August is nothing new, but senior reviewer Sam Naylor was particularly pleased when a warm weekend gave him a chance to spend some time in our Mazda MX-5 RF with the roof down. A trip to the Yorkshire Moors was a perfect demonstrator of the RF’s mix of abilities. The long drive up from his home in Surrey was done with the hard-top in place. That meant he could hear his audiobook in relative clarity, although because the RF suffers from wind noise even with the roof on he did have to turn the volume up loud to hear it. That was embarrassing when he pulled in for fuel, because when you switch the car off it resets the media device to the first file – in…
