INTERIOR PACKAGING INSIDE, there isn’t much to choose between these small premium SUVs on space, especially up front, where both cars are roomy. However, these models have obvious packaging compromises, with the X2 offering slightly less rear legroom than the Evoque. The BMW counters with a larger, more usable boot, so where each model offers its flexibility is slightly different. COMFORT & REFINEMENT WITH its 19-inch alloy wheels (below) and sports suspension, the X2 serves up a firmer ride. This is mitigated somewhat by our car’s affordable £150 adaptive dampers, which offer Comfort and Sport settings depending on the driving characteristics you’re seeking. The Range Rover’s suspension does a better job of ironing out bumps, while it’s also a little more refined at speed. It just can’t match the BMW’s dynamic edge.…

detailer sprays

WAXING is taxing, so how do you get the shine without putting in the time? A detailer spray is the answer. These products can remove light grime and restore the shine to any treatment applied the hard way. Most will also prolong that protective layer, adding to its water-repelling abilities. Application is quick, too, with most just needing to be sprayed on and wiped off – perfect for the summer when you’d rather be enjoying the sun than working in the heat. So which is the one for your car when the weather improves? We sprayed on 10 to find out. How we tested them WE cleaned and sectioned off a previously waxed panel with each detailer. But they were hard to separate, as was the shine they left, so our focus became how well…

infotainment

BMW X2 Navigation Plus £1,260 Key features: Head-up display, WiFi THE X2’s standard 6.5-inch BMW Navigation system has super-sharp graphics and intuitive menus, courtesy of the well-developed iDrive controller. The rotary dial is simple to use, and while some of the shortcut buttons at its base are obscured, it becomes second nature to use. Our test car came with the £1,260 Tech pack, which adds a larger 8.8-inch screen (also with touch control), a head-up display, WiFi and advanced nav with online connectivity that can give live travel and weather info. The system is easy to program with destinations, although if you want more connectivity beyond a standard Bluetooth set-up, you need to download the BMW Connected smartphone app. Enhanced Bluetooth and wireless charging also come as part of the Tech pack; CarPlay is…

ogier targets fourth victory

REIGNING World Rally champion Sebastien Ogier is looking to build on his hat-trick of victories so far in 2018 as the series heads to Argentina this weekend for its next round. The M-Sport Ford Fiesta-driving Frenchman’s strong start to the season sees him 17 points ahead of closest rival Thierry Neuville – the only other driver to top the podium this year. Elsewhere, Welshman Elfyn Evans has a change of co-driver for this event, as his regular navigator Daniel Barritt is still recovering from the effects of a concussion sustained in the M-Sport Fiesta duo’s Rally Mexico crash. Evans’ fellow Welshman Phil Mills, the 2003 world champion co-driver with Petter Solberg, has come out of retirement to fill the seat. Commenting on the latest generation of WRC car, Mills said: “In third and…

hot topic new ford focus

mail@hautoexpress.co.uk @AutoExpress Write to: Watchdog/Letters, Auto Express, Dennis Publishing Ltd, 31-32 Alfred Place, London WC1E 7DP FROM: Rover10 THIS new version of the Focus is the best yet. Even the mainstream models look low, wide and solid. I’m sure the handling concerns of the previous Focus will be addressed, too, as this model was primarily designed for Europe. Once the new Focus is out on the streets, it will sparkle, and I can’t wait to see it. FROM: iudex GOOD to hear Ford has realised that a “global car”, which partially gave up on driving involvement, was not a good move. The exterior design looks promising, partly as it draws on the best aspects of the previous Focus. The interior will need to be upgraded, though, both in terms of quality and space. Join the…

A facelift in 2017 added more safety features and a better infotainment system, but the Golf’s superb practicality and versatility are still present. On test here is the 1.0 TSI 110 model in SE Navigation spec, which costs from £20,730. Design & engineering WHILE the Golf was facelifted this time last year, you may not even notice most of the changes, so in that respect it’s not very different to the C4 Cactus. The evergreen shape never changes too much; it’s pretty much the benchmark…
